There is also a division between locals and visitors alike. Parking spaces designated for the Athenians blue markings, and for visitors to Athens - white. Maximum parking time - 3 hours, and the cost of it is 6 EUR.

Driving regulations

Greece is rather strict country concerning observance of the driving regulations, that's why you should be attentive to traffic signs and try not to violate these regulations as it can lead to serious fines.

Athens is the city with lots of sharp turns and a great number of crossings. Pay close attention to the road to avoid unpleasant situations (for example, do not start on green light at once as local citizens often try to cross on red).

All passengers in a car must be buckled up in their own seatbelts. Children can go in a car if only a child car seat is available. Also, children up to 11 years old must not go in a forward seat.

Use of radar detectors is strictly penalized (2000 EUR fine and confiscation of driver's license). It is prohibited to use hand-held cell phones while driving and also drive in daylight hours with dimmed headlights on.

You can travel around the country by two autobahns. One of them goes between Athens and Thessaloniki, and another one connects Athens with Peloponnesus. Driving the autobahn, watch the speed as its exceeding leads to serious fines. Entering the autobahn a fee must be paid. Fees depend on the type of vehicle and autobahn length (1-3 EUR).
