The best way to see Martinique is to drive its winding coastal and mountain roads, from Fort de France up to St Pierre and the slopes of Mount Pelee. You can stop at black sand beaches, rum distilleries and rainforest lookouts as you go.
On the southern peninsula a car lets you hop between Anse Dufour, Les Anses dArlet and the broad sands of Sainte Anne without rushing. With your own vehicle it is easier to explore small creole villages and quiet coves beyond the main resorts.

"I travelled with a friend and the car was ready on time, clean and comfy. Staff were relaxed, friendly and gave clear directions for driving around Martinique."

"We travelled as a family with two kids and were really pleased. The car had plenty of space for luggage and child seats, and pickup at the airport was quick. Only thing missing was a USB cable, but otherwise everything went smoothly and the staff were patient and kind."

"We visited Martinique as a couple and this hire made the trip easy. The car was almost new, fuel‑efficient and perfect for the hills and narrow coastal roads. Pickup was fast, staff gave us great tips on beaches and markets, and the return took minutes. Only wish the map they gave was a bit clearer."
During the high season (December to April and school holidays), it is wise to book at least 4–6 weeks ahead, especially for small automatics and family cars, which sell out quickly. In the quieter months you can often book 1–2 weeks in advance, but same-day availability is not guaranteed, particularly at Aime Cesaire Airport.
In Martinique, the rental company normally releases the security deposit within 3–7 working days after you return the car with no new damage or fines. Your bank can then take another few days to show the funds as available. Some offers feature no deposit, no credit card, in which case only a smaller pre-authorisation or fuel hold may apply.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you must pay if the car is damaged or stolen, even when basic insurance is included. In Martinique it typically ranges from EUR 600 to EUR 1,500, depending on car class. You can usually reduce this to a much lower figure, or sometimes to zero, by buying optional excess-reduction or full-cover protection before or at pick-up.
Many local and international suppliers still prefer a credit card for the security deposit, but some accept debit cards if they are embossed and in the driver’s name. Selected offers on Bookingcar include no-deposit, no-credit-card deals, usually with slightly higher daily prices. Always check the payment and deposit rules in the rental conditions before confirming.
Outside peak holiday periods, a small car in Martinique usually costs around EUR 30–45 per day. In high season or at short notice, prices for popular categories can rise to EUR 55–80 per day. Larger vehicles, automatics and SUVs are more expensive, and extras such as child seats, additional drivers or young-driver fees will add to the total.
Bookingcar lets you compare prices from many local and international rental companies in Martinique in one search. You can quickly see different car types, fuel policies and insurance options at Aime Cesaire Airport and city locations, then choose the offer that best fits your budget. This price-comparison approach helps you find competitive deals without visiting multiple websites.
If you return the car late in Martinique, most companies charge an extra fee. Returning it more than 30–60 minutes after the agreed time can be treated as an additional rental day at the current daily rate, plus possible penalties. Late return may also void some insurance conditions. Always contact the rental office as soon as you know you will be delayed to discuss options.
Built-up areas (towns and villages): usually 50 km/h
Main roads outside towns: generally 80–90 km/h depending on signage
Dual carriageways and faster sections: up to 110 km/h where indicated
School zones and residential streets: sometimes 30 km/h, watch carefully for local signs
Always follow posted limits, which override the general rules.
As Martinique follows French road law, penalties can include on-the-spot fines and, for residents, points deducted from the driving licence. Typical fines start around EUR 68 for minor speeding and can exceed EUR 135–750 for serious offences. Dangerous speeding or drink-driving may lead to licence suspension or prosecution. Rental companies also add administration fees for processing fines.
Martinique applies the French drink-driving limit: 0.5 g/l of blood, equivalent to about 0.05% BAC, and a stricter 0.2 g/l for novice drivers (less than three years’ licence). Police carry out roadside breath tests, especially at night and on weekends. Exceeding the limit brings heavy fines, potential licence suspension and, for high readings, criminal charges.
Fuel prices are regulated and tend to be stable across the island. As a guide, unleaded petrol (SP95/SP98) is usually around EUR 1.70–1.90 per litre, while diesel is often slightly cheaper, about EUR 1.60–1.80 per litre. Prices can change monthly, so check the latest rate at service stations before long journeys.
There are no toll motorways or paid road sections in Martinique. All public roads, including the main dual carriageways around Fort-de-France and towards the north and south of the island, are free to use. You do not need a vignette or electronic tag, and your rental car will not incur separate road-toll charges while driving on the island.
