Ohrid car rental — FAQ
Booking early for Ohrid is recommended, especially in summer and around major holidays. Secure your car at least 3-4 weeks in advance for the best choice and prices. For peak July-August dates, book 6-8 weeks ahead. Outside high season, a few days before arrival may still work, but selection can be limited.
After you return the car in good condition, the rental company releases the security deposit. Your bank usually processes the return within 7-14 business days, depending on its policies and currency conversion times. If you prefer to avoid a frozen limit on your card, look for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals when searching.
The excess, or deductible, is the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen. In North Macedonia it typically ranges from about MKD 18,000 to MKD 60,000, depending on car class. The insurer or rental covers costs above that limit. You can often reduce or waive the excess by purchasing additional coverage when booking.
Most rental desks in Ohrid require a major credit card in the driver’s name for the security deposit. Some providers may accept debit cards or cash only on specific plans and with extra checks. To skip a large blocked amount, search for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals that are available for selected cars and suppliers.
Rental prices in Ohrid vary by season, car class and supplier. As a general guide, expect around MKD 1,800–2,800 per day for a small economy car, and more for SUVs or automatics, especially in July and August. Booking earlier and being flexible with pick-up times usually helps you find lower daily rates.
At Ohrid - Airport (OHD) you will currently find major international brands on-site. The desks of Hertz and Avis are located in or near the arrivals area, allowing you to pick up your reserved car shortly after landing. Make sure your voucher states “Ohrid Airport” as the location to avoid confusion with downtown offices.
Bookingcar lets you compare many local and international suppliers in Ohrid in one search. You can filter by fuel policy, mileage, insurance and rating, and clearly see deposit and excess rules before paying. Multilingual support, secure online payment and regular special offers help you find a car that fits your budget and plans.
If you return the car late, most rental companies charge extra. This might be an additional hourly fee or a full extra rental day once you exceed the grace period stated in your contract. If you foresee a delay, contact the rental company as soon as possible; they may adjust your rental and minimise penalties when informed in advance.
Ohrid has several convenient parking options near the center and lake. Popular choices include the large car park at Biljanini Izvori Sports Center and paid zones around the Old Town, marked as “Zone 1/2”. You can also use the parking near Port of Ohrid and Ohrid City Center, usually paying at meters or via local parking machines.
Cross-border travel from Ohrid is usually possible but must be authorised by the rental company. You need written permission and additional insurance for entering neighbouring countries, plus a possible cross-border fee. Always declare your planned border crossings when booking so the supplier can prepare documents and confirm which countries are allowed.
Standard limits, unless signs say otherwise, are:
Urban areas: 50 km/h
Open roads (outside towns): 80 km/h
Express roads: 100 km/h
Motorways (autopats): 120 km/h
Conditions, weather or roadworks may require lower speeds. Police speed checks are common, especially on motorways and main approaches to larger cities such as Skopje and Bitola.
