In the UAE, the currency used is the dirham (current rate - 1 dirham = 0.27 USD). The police take traffic violations seriously, requests from violators are not accepted, and the outcome of all accidents is decided directly on the road. Of all the emirates, Abu Dhabi has the highest fines.

In the city there are many toll roads. To use a toll road you must make a payment at the entrance (indicated by a large arch). The average cost is 4-5 dirhams. Local drivers use special cards for payment and foreign drivers can use an ordinary credit card. The maximum daily payment for travel on toll roads is 25 dirhams. If the interval between passing under the arches is less than an hour, you do not need to pay the second time.

Notably, on the roads of Abu Dhabi there are both minimum and maximum speed limits:

• On the motorway you may drive no faster than 120 km/h and no slower than 60 km/h;
• The maximum speed for minor highways is 100 km/h;
• In the city it is permitted to drive no faster than 60 km/h.

If you see a sign of 120/140, it is interpreted as follows: the maximum speed in the current lane is 120 km/h, and the overall maximum speed in the country is 140 km/h.

The fewest vehicles in city car parks are usually seen between 13:00 and 16:00, but sometimes finding a space is complicated by the fact that local residents use their lunch break for shopping and visiting cafes. Parking is prohibited on sections of road with red markings. Improperly parked cars are taken to a penalty car park and their owners receive heavy fines.

Abu Dhabi, like any other city in the UAE, is characterised by a relatively low pricing policy for fuel. Thus, drivers of rented cars in Abu Dhabi are pleasantly surprised by the high quality of petrol. The cost of fuel at all petrol stations is kept at approximately the same level.

Self-service at petrol stations is not provided. Their employees provide customers with a complete service, from refuelling the vehicle to washing the windows and checking the tyre pressure. The last two services are completely free of charge.
