For Armenia, it is best to book your hire car at least 2–4 weeks before your trip, especially for summer and holiday periods, when popular classes and automatics sell out quickly. Booking earlier usually means better choice of vehicles, clearer conditions and lower prices, particularly for pickups at Yerevan Zvartnots Airport and central locations.
In Armenia the security deposit is normally released by the rental company within 3–14 days after you return the car, provided it is in the agreed condition and without new fines. Your bank may then take a few extra days to show the amount as available. Some special no-deposit deals avoid a traditional card block altogether.
The excess is the maximum amount you must pay if the rental car is damaged or stolen. In Armenia this is typically around 70,000–400,000 AMD, varying by car class and provider. Fines for speeding, running red lights or using a phone while driving in Armenia commonly range from about 10,000 to 100,000 AMD, depending on severity and how much you exceeded the limit. Many offences are recorded by cameras and sent to the rental company, which may add an administrative fee for handling the paperwork. Serious cases can involve licence restrictions or court action.
Armenia enforces a zero-tolerance policy for drink-driving for most drivers, so the effective legal limit is 0.00% blood alcohol concentration. Police carry out roadside checks, especially at night and on main roads. Any detectable alcohol can lead to heavy fines, licence suspension and possible criminal consequences, so you should not drink at all if you plan to drive a rental car.
Fuel prices in Armenia change with the market, but as a general guide, unleaded petrol usually costs around 550–650 AMD per litre, and diesel is often slightly cheaper or similar. Remote regions may be a little more expensive than Yerevan. Most stations accept cash and major cards, yet it is wise to carry some AMD, especially when travelling outside large towns.
At present, Armenia does not have a nationwide toll motorway system or vignette requirement for ordinary passenger cars. Most public roads, including main intercity routes, are free to use. If you drive on a privately operated road section, bridge or tunnel in the future, any tolls will be clearly signed and you should follow the instructions given locally or by the rental company.
