Fines for violations of road traffic regulations in Belgium

The Belgian police keep a close watch on order on the country’s roads. Both police patrols and fixed safety cameras operate everywhere. Try not to break traffic regulations, otherwise you may have to pay quite large fines.

  • Children in the car

If you are going to carry children who are younger than 12 years of age, be sure to inform the operator when making your booking. You will then be provided with a booster seat. Belgian legislation allows children to be transported only in appropriate child seats.

  • Dipped headlights

Unlike in most European countries, in Belgium you are not obliged to use dipped headlights if there is no particular need for them. Moreover, a police officer who decides that you have switched on your dipped headlights by mistake can stop you.

Cost of fuel in Belgium

There are a large number of fuel stations in Belgium, so you are unlikely to have serious problems if you run low on fuel. The great majority of fuel stations operate automatically. In general, they accept credit cards only, especially at night. The cost of fuel is the same at all Belgian fuel stations:

Average prices vary by season and location, but a small economy car in Belgium typically costs around EUR 40 to EUR 70 per day, including basic insurance and standard mileage. Airport pick-ups and one-way rentals can be more expensive, while longer rentals (one week or more) often bring the daily rate down. In Belgium, the legal blood alcohol limit for most drivers is 0.5 g/l (0.05%). For professional and novice drivers (typically under two years’ licence), a stricter limit of 0.2 g/l (0.02%) may apply.
