რატომ მართოთ სამხრეთ აფრიკაში

South Africa is made for road trips, from Cape Towns Chapman s Peak Drive to the Garden Route through Knysna and Tsitsikamma. With a hire car you can adjust your schedule for viewpoints, farm stalls and small coastal towns.

Inland, driving yourself along the Panorama Route or through the Winelands gives access to remote lodges and lesser known reserves. You are not tied to tour timetables, so sunrise game drives or late dinners are easier to fit in.

პრაქტიკული ინფორმაცია მძღოლებისთვის

Traffic Laws

Traffic regulations in South Africa are taken seriously, so you should adhere to the established rules:

  • Cars drive on the left-hand side of the road;
  • Overtaking is permitted only on the right-hand side of the vehicle;
  • The principle of "priority from the left" applies, i.e. priority is given to vehicles approaching from the left;
  • Do not exceed the speed limit or the legal alcohol limit;
  • At an intersection controlled by stop signs, all vehicles must stop, and the first to proceed is the one that arrived at the intersection first.

Allowable alcohol

In South Africa, there are strict restrictions on driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. If you get behind the wheel after drinking, you should be aware that the maximum permitted alcohol level in the driver's body is 0.5 per thousand. This is one of the most common limits worldwide, although in many countries any alcohol is prohibited while driving, and in some there are no specific limits at all.

The cost of fuel - information for car renters in South Africa

In South Africa, two types of fuel are used for vehicles: diesel and petrol. The price of fuel in the country is average compared with other states. Gas as a motor fuel is not generally used in South Africa.

The average cost of fuel in South Africa:

  • 1 litre of petrol - $ 1.12;
  • 1 litre of diesel fuel - 95 cents.

Toll roads

Throughout the country there are roads on which travel is subject to tolls. These include some of the national roads and motorways. The tolls on them vary significantly. The amount payable for road use ranges from 50 cents to $ 7. To pay for travel, drivers can use cash or a credit card.

"We had a fun road trip and the car felt safe and reliable, paperwork was quick too. Only downside was a long wait at pickup, with too few staff on duty for the afternoon rush."

"I was impressed with how smooth everything went. Booking was straightforward, car was nearly new and very fuel-efficient. Staff at the airport branch were friendly, explained tolls clearly and did a quick, fair inspection on return. I’d happily rent here again."

"I travelled with a friend along the Garden Route and the car was perfect for long drives and small town roads. Pickup was quick, staff helped us choose a route and warned us about night driving and fuel stops. Drop-off in Cape Town was simple and hassle-free, very professional."

გაქირავება სამხრეთ აფრიკაში — FAQ

For the best choice and price, it is wise to book at least 3 to 6 weeks before your trip, especially for school holidays, Easter, and the Christmas peak. In Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg over summer, popular classes and automatics can sell out, so booking 2 to 3 months ahead is sensible for those periods.
Most South African rental companies place a hold on your card when you collect the car. The hold is usually released within 3 to 10 working days after you return the vehicle, provided there is no new damage, extra fuel or traffic fines. Some banks can take a little longer to reflect the released amount in ZAR.
The excess is the maximum amount you must pay if the car is damaged or stolen, even when insurance is included. In South Africa, it often ranges from about ZAR 5,000 to ZAR 25,000, depending on vehicle class. You can usually buy extra cover from the rental company or a third party to reduce or even waive the excess.
Most major suppliers in South Africa prefer a credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. Some local or broker deals allow no-deposit or no-credit-card rentals if you use a debit card and meet extra checks, but availability is limited and you may face higher rates or stricter conditions, so always read the payment terms carefully.
Prices vary by season and city. As a rough guide, a small economy car in South Africa typically costs around ZAR 350 to ZAR 650 per day, including basic insurance and limited kilometres. During peak holiday periods in Cape Town or along the Garden Route, rates can rise significantly, while longer rentals of a week or more often work out cheaper per day.
Bookingcar lets you compare prices from multiple South African and international rental brands in one search, helping you quickly find cheaper or better-value offers for your dates. You can easily filter by car type, mileage and insurance options, then book online with transparent pricing, instead of checking each rental company’s website separately.
If you return the car late in South Africa, rental companies normally charge an additional fee, often calculated as an extra day once you exceed a grace period of 29 to 59 minutes, depending on the supplier. Prolonged delays may be billed at a higher last-minute rate. Always call the branch in advance if you expect to be late or need to extend.
Standard limits, unless signs show otherwise:
  • Urban areas (towns and cities): usually 60 km/h
  • Rural roads: generally 80 km/h
  • Open roads / main regional roads: commonly 100 km/h
  • National highways / freeways: usually 120 km/h
Speed cameras are common, especially near cities and small towns, so watch for local signage.
Traffic fines depend on the offence and the municipality. Typical penalties include:
  • Speeding: on-the-spot or camera fines from about ZAR 250 upwards
  • Serious speeding or reckless driving: higher fines, possible court appearance
  • Red-light or stop-sign offences: significant fines
Unpaid fines may be charged via your rental company and can include administration fees.
South Africa has strict drink-driving laws. The legal limit is generally 0.05 g of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, or 0.24 mg per 1,000 ml of breath. For practical purposes, even one or two drinks can put you close to the limit. Police roadblocks are common, and penalties can include heavy fines, arrest, and cancellation of your driving privileges.
Fuel prices in South Africa are regulated and adjusted monthly, and they differ slightly by region. As a ballpark, petrol (unleaded) often falls around ZAR 22 to ZAR 26 per litre, while diesel is sometimes a little cheaper or similar. Always check the latest pump prices when you arrive, as international oil prices and the rand exchange rate cause regular changes.
Yes, South Africa has several toll roads, especially on major routes like the N1, N3, N4, and N2 sections. Most use per-use toll plazas where you pay in cash or by card. Around Gauteng there are also electronic e-tolls with automatic gantries; rental cars may be fitted with tags, and the toll charges are later billed through your rental agreement.
