Why drive in Slovakia
Drive from Bratislava to the High Tatras via Trnava and Banska Bystrica, stopping at medieval castles and vineyard towns along the way. With a car you set your own pace between hikes, mountain lakes and cosy village pensions.
Local roads link spots that are hard to reach by train or bus, from Slovensky Raj gorges to Orava and Liptov. Renting gives you the freedom to detour to wooden churches, quiet thermal spas and scenic valley viewpoints whenever you like.

- The maximum speed allowed within built-up areas is 50 km/h

The police, speed guns and cameras strictly monitor speed limits in the country.
Road traffic regulations in Slovakia
The road traffic regulations are familiar to European drivers. However, there are some specific features.
- Dipped headlights
The road traffic regulations in Slovakia require drivers to use dipped headlights regardless of the time of day, season or weather.
- Seat belts
Safety is the most important thing. That is why all passengers, including those sitting in the rear seats, must wear seat belts.
Cost of fuel in Slovakia
In Slovakia, there are quite a lot of fuel stations, especially near express roads. Almost all of them are attended. You can pay for fuel both in cash and by credit card. Prices are similar at all fuel stations.
- One litre of 95 petrol costs 1.46 Euro
- The price for one litre of 98 petrol is 1.64 Euro
- One litre of diesel fuel costs 1.37 Euro.
There are also quite a lot of gas stations. However, your car will be filled with gas only if you have a document allowing you to drive a car with gas equipment.
Toll roads in Slovakia
There are many toll roads in Slovakia. If you plan to use them, purchase vignettes beforehand. There are two types of vignette, so choose the one suitable for you.
- 30-day vignette
When purchasing this type of vignette, you gain the right to drive on all toll roads without any limitations within one calendar month.
- 10-day vignette
If your stay in Slovakia is shorter, a 10-day vignette, which gives you the right to use all toll roads for 10 days, will be sufficient.
Whichever vignette you choose, you must attach it near the vehicle inspection certificate in the top right-hand corner of the windscreen.
