Fuel costs when renting a car in Bucharest
Romania has a wide network of petrol stations where you can buy unleaded petrol (95 and 98) and diesel fuel. Gas is also available, and it is permitted to carry fuel in canisters. The cost of fuel is almost the same throughout the country. The prices are shown in the table below:

Traffic laws
- On Romanian roads, vehicles must drive with dipped headlights on at all times. For violations, the driver will have to pay a fine of 134 RON. Fog lights may be used only in fog; if used in clear conditions, the driver will be fined 201 RON.
- Seat belts must be worn by the driver and all passengers while travelling by car. If this rule is broken, a fine of 134 RON will be issued.
- While driving, it is forbidden for the driver to use a handheld mobile phone. Talking on a mobile phone is only allowed when using a hands-free device.
- A child aged 12 years and over, with a height from 1.5 m upwards, may travel in the front seat of a car. Younger children must travel only in the rear seats, using an appropriate child restraint system.

When travelling on motorways and city streets, the permitted speed is indicated on road signs. If there are no signs, you can rely on the following limits:

Breaking the speed limits is punishable by fines, the amounts of which are listed below:
- If you exceed the speed limit by 10-20 km/h, you will have to pay 134 RON.
- If the speed is exceeded by 21-40 km/h, the fine will be from 201 to 268 RON.
- Exceeding the speed by 41-50 km/h will result in a fine of 402 RON.
- If the driver exceeds the speed limit by 50 km/h or more, the fine will range from 603 to 1,340 RON.
Permitted alcohol level
When driving on city streets or country roads in Romania, the driver must be completely sober. Any alcohol in the blood is forbidden, and the police regularly carry out checks and detain offenders. Patrols are most often found near restaurants and entertainment venues, especially in resort cities popular with tourists. A driver found to have been drinking will be fined, with amounts ranging from 603 to 1,340 RON.
After the fine is issued, the inspector will confiscate the driving licence, and in serious cases the driver may be taken into custody. First, a suspected offender is tested; if the level of intoxication is less than 0.8 ‰, a substantial fine is issued and the driver can be disqualified from driving for a period of 3 months. When the alcohol concentration is greater than 0.8 ‰, in addition to a fine the vehicle owner may, by court decision, face imprisonment for 1 to 5 years.
