Penalties for traffic violations on a hired car in Salzburg
Driving along the Austrian motorways without a vignette is punished by a penalty in the sum of € 120 if paid on-site.
In case it is impossible to impossibility of on-site payment, the penalty value is likely to be increased € 300 to € 3,000 during the court litigation.
Illegal parking in a forbidden place, as well as exceeding of a time limit at fee-based parking zones are assessed by € 36.

Parking
Parking in the municipal streets of Salzburg is time-limited and fee-based.

When travelling through Austria on a car rent in Salzburg, there should be taken into account that prices offered by fuel filling station, which are located along the motorways, are a bit higher (the difference comprises 10 to 20 euro cents). For the purpose of economy it is recommended to use the services of the fuel filling stations located near the large shopping malls.
Car booking in Salzburg: toll roads
It is allowed to use motorways, special road sections, and highways in Austria only upon the toll payment.
If you have hired a car in Salzburg for driving through the net of toll roads, you will be required to purchase a vignette.
Validity of an Austrian vignette
The time period, provided for the usage of the toll roads net, depends on the type of a purchased vignette:
- A 10 days vignette grants the right to use toll roads of Austria for ten days consecutively. The date is to be marked by the buyer.
- A 2 months vignette grants the right to use toll roads of Austria for two months. The vignette expires at the end of the day after the 2 two months period, starting from the date marked by the buyer.
- A 1 year vignette grants the right to use toll roads of Austria during the time period starting from the 1st of December and finishing with the 31st of January next year.
All types of vignettes are available at any fuel filling station located at the country entries, in Salzburg itself, and also in the neighboring countries.
