Traffic regulations
- In Antalya there is right-hand traffic, with overtaking permitted on the left.
- Children may only be carried in the rear passenger seats. Children under 12 years of age, or whose height does not exceed 150 cm, are not allowed to travel in the front seat.
- The use of seat belts is compulsory for the driver and all passengers in the car.
- It is forbidden to talk on a mobile phone without a hands-free kit that allows both hands to remain free.
- You must always give way to ambulances, fire services, security services and the police.
- There must be a first-aid kit in the car and a warning triangle in the boot. A fire extinguisher is not required.
Speed limit
Driving is only allowed up to the following maximum speeds:
- In built-up areas: 50 km/h;
- Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h.
Parking a rental car
You may park wherever there is space and no prohibitory sign. Parking can be either free or paid. In municipal car parks the price is much lower than in private ones. At night it is recommended to leave the car in a guarded car park.
Permissible blood alcohol level for the driver of a rental car
The blood alcohol level must not exceed 0.5 ppm. Otherwise, the driver will be fined and, if the offence is repeated, the penalty will increase significantly. It is better not to drink and drive, to avoid accidents and problems with the police.
A key feature of driving in Antalya is the frequent failure of local drivers to comply with traffic rules. Turkish drivers like to drive fast, but often do not indicate before turning or stopping. At night many "forget" to switch on their lights, but may still stop suddenly in the middle of the carriageway. Drivers often cross onto the central line and continue driving along it. If you park your rental car somewhere near a residential building, there is a good chance that you will take the space of an Antalya resident who, at best, will loudly express their displeasure at your intrusion and, at worst, may damage the car. It is much safer to use municipal car parks.
