In Bahrain, modern highways link Manamas souqs and malls with the Bahrain Fort, the Tree of Life and the F1 circuit in Sakhir. Coastal drives reveal marinas, desert edges and old villages.

Practical Information for Drivers

Traffic Laws

Driving in Bahrain is completely identical to driving in Russia. In addition, tourists do not necessarily need an international driving permit; a national licence is sufficient. If you come with a view to permanent residence, this rule does not apply. A rental car in Bahrain must be covered by third party insurance. The approximate cost of this service is 60 dinars (about $160) per year.

Speed Limits

In urban areas the maximum permitted speed for vehicles of all types is 50 km/h.

On highways the maximum permitted speed is 80–100 km/h, depending on the route. At the entrance to built-up areas the speed is limited to 50 km/h.

Fines for traffic violations in a rented car in Bahrain

From February 2015 new, stricter traffic regulations came into force. The table shows the main offences.

Imprisonment from 2 months up to 2 years and a fine from 1000 to 2000 BD

Repeated violation within a year

Penalties are doubled

If an accident occurs, you must wait for the police to arrive. You will be asked to provide the following documents if you are involved in a traffic accident in a rented car in Bahrain:

  • a valid driving licence;
  • the vehicle registration document;
  • insurance (third party).

The traffic police will check these documents and will give you a document which you must take with you to the hearing.

Toll roads in Bahrain

There is only one route for which you have to pay a toll. This is the King Fahd Causeway, a 25 km highway and dam that connects Bahrain to Saudi Arabia. The toll is 2 dinars (about $5.5).

"I landed late at night but the staff were still welcoming and efficient. Paperwork was quick, the car was spotless and nearly new, and the air‑conditioning was powerful, perfect for Bahrain heat. Drop‑off at the airport was just as easy. I would happily book again."

Renting in Bahrain — FAQ

For Bahrain, booking 2 to 4 weeks before your trip usually secures the best choice and rates, especially for airport pick-ups and popular compact cars. During busy times such as Formula 1, public holidays, and winter tourist season, consider reserving 4 to 6 weeks ahead, as availability and prices can change quickly on a small island.
In Bahrain, the security deposit is normally held on your card at pick-up and released after the car is checked back in. Banks typically unblock the amount within 5 to 14 working days, depending on your card issuer. Some offers, including selected no deposit, no credit card deals, may use a smaller hold or alternative guarantee instead.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you must pay if the rental car is damaged or stolen. In Bahrain, it typically ranges from about BHD 100 to BHD 400, depending on vehicle class and supplier. If repair costs are lower, you pay only that amount. You can often reduce the excess, sometimes close to zero, by purchasing additional insurance cover when booking.
Many rental companies in Bahrain still prefer a credit card for the security deposit, but some accept major debit cards or cash, subject to extra checks. Through Bookingcar you can sometimes find no-deposit, no-credit-card deals where the deposit is reduced or covered by extra insurance. Always read payment conditions carefully before confirming your reservation.
For a small economy car in Bahrain, average prices usually fall around BHD 10 to BHD 18 per day, depending on the season, demand, and pick-up location. Larger vehicles, SUVs, or luxury models can be significantly more expensive. Rates often include basic insurance and limited mileage, but check whether taxes, airport surcharges, and optional extras are already included in the total.
Bookingcar allows you to compare prices from many local and international car hire companies in Bahrain in one search. You can quickly see different offers, vehicle types, and insurance options side by side, helping you find a competitive rate for your dates. This price-comparison approach saves time and makes it easier to choose a deal that matches your budget.
If you return your car late in Bahrain, most rental firms charge an additional fee. This may be an extra hourly rate or a full extra day if you exceed the grace period, which is often only 30–60 minutes. Late return can also invalidate your insurance for the extra time. Always contact the rental office in advance if you expect any delay.
Speed limits in Bahrain are generally:
  • Urban areas: around 50 km/h, with some streets lower
  • Main roads / dual carriageways: typically 80–100 km/h
  • Highways / motorways: usually 100–120 km/h, as signed
Always follow posted signs, as limits can vary near schools, construction zones, and on certain bridges.
Penalties in Bahrain can be substantial.
  • Speeding and red-light offences: fines often from about BHD 20 upwards, higher for serious cases
  • Mobile phone use while driving: fines and possible points
  • Dangerous driving or major violations: heavier fines, licence suspension or even imprisonment
Unpaid fines may be passed to the rental company and charged to your card with administrative fees.
Bahrain effectively applies a zero-tolerance approach to drink-driving. The safe and legal assumption is that the permitted blood alcohol concentration is 0.00%. Police checks can be strict, and penalties for driving under the influence may include heavy fines, imprisonment, and deportation for foreigners. It is strongly recommended not to consume any alcohol before driving.
Fuel in Bahrain is relatively inexpensive compared with many countries. As a broad indication, petrol typically costs around BHD 0.20 to BHD 0.25 per litre, depending on grade and current government pricing. Prices can change occasionally, so it is wise to check local fuel station boards or recent online information shortly before your trip for the latest rates.
There are currently no toll roads in Bahrain, and you do not need a vignette or electronic tag for standard highways or the main causeways within the country. However, if in future any toll arrangements or congestion charges are introduced, your rental company will typically inform you at pick-up and may specify how such fees are to be paid.
