Why drive in Chile

Driving in Chile lets you experience the full range from the Atacama Desert to the vineyards of the Central Valley at your own pace. South of Santiago, the Panamericana links cities like Talca and Chillan with easy detours into the Andes.

Further down, the Carretera Austral winds through fjords, forests and turquoise rivers where buses are infrequent. With a rental you can linger at lakes around Puerto Varas or explore the Pacific coast near Valparaiso without fixed schedules.

Practical Information for Drivers

The cost of fuel for cars rented in Chile

Petrol stations in Chile are widespread. Here you can buy unleaded petrol and diesel fuel for cars. However, the cost per litre of fuel is high. On average across the country, the price per litre is about $ 1.5.

Traffic laws

  • Drivers should take particular care around public transport. These vehicles are easily identified by their bright livery. Drivers of public buses frequently violate traffic rules and can behave unpredictably and aggressively.
  • When travelling around the country, you must follow the general traffic rules. Both the driver and passengers must always wear seat belts. While driving, you must not smoke, listen to a music player on headphones, or talk on a mobile phone without a hands-free headset.
  • Always carry your driving licence, insurance, credit card and other documents in the car. Chilean Carabineros often stop motorists for checks, even if there are no obvious reasons.
  • Pay particular attention to pedestrian crossings, where the driver must always give priority to pedestrians. Failure to comply with this law can result in fines and even disqualification of your driving licence.
  • You can park in Chile in free car parks and at paid parking facilities. The cost of the service depends on the location and type of the car park, as well as any additional services provided. The average cost of parking in the country ranges from $ 2 to $ 3.5 per hour.

Speed limit on roads in Chile

In cities and on rural roads in Chile there are enough signs to show the speed limit on each road. If there is no posted limit, follow these general rules:

  • On urban streets, cars may travel at speeds of up to 70 km/h.
  • Outside built-up areas, on major roads and motorways, you may drive at up to 120 km/h.

Parking rental cars in Chile

In Chilean towns and cities there are plenty of parking areas, some free of charge and some where you can leave your car for a fee. These may be small on-street spaces or large car parks, which can be covered, guarded and very secure. The cost of parking depends on its location and type. The average cost of parking in the country is about $ 2-3.5 per hour.

"I travelled with a friend and the process was smooth, from booking to pickup in Santiago. The car handled well on mountain roads and used little fuel. Only minor issue was a short wait at the counter, but staff were friendly and the return in Temuco was very fast."

Renting in Chile — FAQ

Booking 2–4 weeks ahead is usually enough for most cities in Chile. For peak periods such as summer (December to February), public holidays or ski season, it is safer to reserve 6–8 weeks in advance, especially for 4x4s and automatic cars, which sell out quickly in Patagonia, Atacama and popular coastal resorts.
In Chile the deposit is normally held as a pre-authorisation in CLP on your card. After you return the car without new damage or extra charges, the provider asks your bank to release it. This typically takes 3–10 working days, but some banks can take longer. Certain no-deposit deals avoid this hold entirely.
The excess is the maximum amount you must pay if the car is damaged or stolen. In Chile it often ranges from about CLP 500,000 to CLP 1,500,000, depending on vehicle class and supplier. The insurer covers costs above that. You can usually buy additional coverage to reduce the excess significantly, sometimes close to zero.
Most Chilean suppliers require a major credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. However, some partners offer no deposit, no credit card or debit-card-friendly deals on selected vehicles. These are limited and may come with stricter conditions, such as lower mileage limits or extra documentation at pick-up.
Prices vary by season and region, but a small car in Chile typically costs around CLP 30,000–45,000 per day, including basic insurance and standard mileage. SUVs and 4x4s for Patagonia or Atacama can range from CLP 60,000–110,000 per day. Booking early and comparing offers helps you secure better daily rates.
Bookingcar compares prices from many rental companies in Chile, allowing you to quickly see different rates, vehicle types and conditions in one place. By checking these options side by side, you can pick the most suitable and cost-effective offer, making it easier to find a competitive deal for your trip.
If you return your car late in Chile, most companies charge an extra fee, often based on an hourly rate that can add up to a full extra day. After several hours, they may re-price the whole rental. Always inform the rental office as soon as you know you will be delayed to minimise any additional charges.
Typical limits in Chile are:
  • Urban areas: usually 50 km/h
  • Rural roads: generally 70–100 km/h (check local signs)
  • Dual carriageways outside towns: around 100 km/h
  • Motorways and main highways: normally up to 120 km/h where signposted
Always follow posted signs, as limits may be lower near schools, roadworks or in specific regions.
Fines in Chile depend on the severity of the offence. Speeding, illegal parking and mobile phone use while driving can lead to significant fines, often from around CLP 30,000 upward. Serious violations such as drunk driving or dangerous overtaking can result in much higher penalties, licence suspension and, in extreme cases, criminal charges.
Chile has strict drink-driving rules. The maximum legal blood alcohol limit for most drivers is 0.03% (0.3 g/l). At 0.03–0.08% you may already face severe penalties, and above 0.08% it is considered a serious offence, with high fines, possible imprisonment and licence suspension. It is safest not to drink at all before driving.
Fuel prices change frequently, but as a guide, 95-octane petrol in Chile is often around CLP 1,300–1,600 per litre, with diesel usually slightly cheaper. Costs vary by region, with remote areas such as Patagonia sometimes higher. Many stations accept cards, but in rural areas it is wise to carry some cash in Chilean pesos.
Yes, many major highways in Chile, such as Ruta 5 and access roads around Santiago, use per-use tolls. In Santiago, electronic “TAG” systems are common, and rental cars are often equipped for automatic billing, charged to you later. On intercity routes, you usually pay at traditional toll booths in cash or by card where available.
