Practical Information for Drivers

Speed limits for cars and local car rentals in Hamburg

Since we are interested in cars, the speed limits are as follows:

  • in the city, you must stick to a speed of 50 km/h;
  • outside built-up areas, you can increase your speed to 100 km/h;
  • if you want to drive on the motorway, the recommended speed on these roads is 130 km/h.

Parking rented cars in Hamburg

Remember we have already mentioned that the city centre is mainly a pedestrian and cycling area? You will most likely have to look for a parking space, but bear in mind that you are unlikely to find free parking. Therefore, you have several options:

  • buy a parking disc at a petrol station, place it under the windscreen so it is clearly visible, and set the time when the car was parked;
  • use parking spaces equipped with ticket machines, but remember that these machines strictly record the parking time, and if you are late picking up the car, you will have to pay a fine.

Permitted alcohol limits

Germany is in principle quite tolerant of residual alcohol (from the night before), as well as, for example, drinking a mug of light beer two hours before driving. If you are stopped and asked to breathe into a breathalyser tube, an alcohol level of 0.3 ‰ should not be a problem. In addition, you may even have 0.5 ‰, provided you have not committed any offences. Anything above these figures is punishable by a fine and disqualification from driving.

The cost of fuel

If you rented a car in Hamburg, then of course you will need to refuel it. In Germany you can buy 95 and 98 petrol, as well as diesel fuel. Here are the approximate price levels for these types of fuel for your car:

95 petrol98 petrolDiesel fuel
€ 1,51€ 1,58€ 1,38

It is also worth remembering that prices at petrol stations located near major shopping centres will be slightly lower than at filling stations offering petrol along the motorways.

Toll roads

The roads throughout Germany, and in Hamburg in particular, are free of charge. There is only one paid scenic route through a very beautiful area. You pay for access to it more for the opportunity to admire the surroundings than for the use of an expensive road itself. There are also two toll tunnels, but if your goal is a visit to Hamburg, you are unlikely to use them, as they are not even in the vicinity of Hamburg.

Hamburg car rental — FAQ

Booking early usually means more choice and better prices in Hamburg. For peak summer, big trade fairs and weekends, try to reserve 4-8 weeks ahead. Outside busy periods, 1-3 weeks is often enough, but last-minute bookings can be more expensive and may limit vehicle categories or automatic transmissions.
After you drop off the car in Hamburg and the inspection is cleared, the provider releases the security deposit. Your bank typically processes the release within 7-14 business days, depending on its rules. Choosing no-deposit / no-credit-card deals can help you avoid a traditional blocked security amount altogether.
The excess, or deductible, is the maximum amount you pay if the Hamburg rental car is damaged or stolen. In Germany it often ranges roughly from EUR 800 to EUR 1,500, depending on vehicle class and supplier. You can usually lower or even reduce it to near-zero by purchasing additional excess protection or full-coverage insurance.
Most rental desks in Hamburg still require a major credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. Some local or broker-arranged offers may accept debit cards or cash, often with stricter checks. Look for specially marked no-deposit / no-credit-card deals if you prefer to avoid using a credit card.
In Hamburg, a small or compact rental car typically costs around EUR 40-70 per day, depending on season, booking timing, and supplier. Larger cars, automatics, and SUVs can be higher, especially during trade fairs or summer holidays. Always check what is included: mileage, insurance, airport fees and young-driver surcharges.
At Hamburg Airport (HAM) you will find major international and local brands, including Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Enterprise, Alamo, Avis, Stellantis &You Auto-Abo Hamburg Lokstedt, Autovermietung Wucherpfennig & Krohn GmbH Norderstedt, and FIAT STELLANTIS &YOU HAMBURG LOKSTEDT, typically located in or near the terminal car-rental center.
Bookingcar lets you compare many Hamburg rental suppliers at once, making it easier to find low prices, suitable fuel policies and fair mileage limits. You can filter by automatic or manual, size, insurance options and pick-up locations like the airport or city center, then book securely online with clear rental conditions in English.
If you bring the Hamburg rental back late, most companies charge additional hourly or full-day rates, and your insurance coverage might not apply beyond the agreed time. As soon as you know you will be delayed, call the rental company or Bookingcar support to request an extension and minimize potential penalties.
Central options include underground or multi-storey car parks like Parkhaus Europa Passage, Parkhaus Gänsemarkt and the Contipark facility at Hühnerposten near the main station. Follow “P” signs to public garages, take a ticket at entry, then pay at a machine before exit. In many streets, paid parking zones use meters or mobile apps.
From Hamburg you can usually drive into neighboring countries such as Denmark, the Netherlands or Poland, but cross-border rules vary by provider and vehicle class. Some routes incur extra fees or are prohibited. Always declare your planned international travel when booking so your rental terms and insurance remain valid.
Standard speed limits in Germany (unless signs say otherwise):
  • Built-up areas (towns and cities): 50 km/h
  • Outside built-up areas (rural roads): 100 km/h
  • Dual carriageways without central junctions: usually 100–120 km/h
  • Autobahn: recommended 130 km/h; some stretches have fixed limits, others have no general limit but conditions and signage must always be respected
