Car rental in Innsbruck

• For exceeding the speed limit in built-up areas - from 21 Euro up to revocation of the driver's licence for a six-week period;
• Blood alcohol content level up to:

• 1,19% is punishable by a fine of up to 3700 Euro along with revocation of the driver's licence for a period of 1 to 3 months;
• 1,59% is punishable by a fine of 1200 to 4400 Euro along with revocation of the driver's licence for a period of 4 months;
• 1,6% is punishable by a fine of up to 5900 Euro along with revocation of the driver's licence for a period of 6 months. The same applies in the event of refusal to take a blood alcohol content test.

When renting a car in Innsbruck, it is useful to be aware of the speed limit regulations on all types of roads. If there are no special signs on the roads, the following limits apply:

• Motor vehicles up to 3,5 tons and motorcycles: in built-up areas - up to 50 km/h, outside the city - up to 100 km/h, on autobahns - 130 km/h.
• Motor vehicles up to 3,5 tons with trailers: in built-up areas - 50 km/h, outside the city - up to 80 km/h, on motorways - up to 100 km/h.

The minimum speed limit on the autobahns is 60 km/h.

If you decide to park your hire car in the streets of Innsbruck, please remember that parking there is fee-based and time-limited:

• Parking for a 10-minute period is free of charge;
• Parking for a 30-minute period costs 1 Euro;
• Parking for a 60-minute period costs 2 Euro;
• Parking for a 90-minute period costs 3 Euro;
• Parking for a 180-minute period costs 4 Euro.

If you are looking for a longer period of parking, please make use of underground garages or larger car parks. A garage fee is up to 25 Euro (per day), and a surface parking fee is up to 3 Euro (per day). Fee-based parking spaces within the city area are marked with a blue line. To pay for parking, please go to a "Traffic" shop, where you will receive a voucher-timer for a specified period. Free parking is marked with a white line.

The upper limit is 0,49%, but for drivers with less than 24 months' driving experience the admissible limit is 0,01%.

If the blood alcohol content is higher (0,5% to 0,7%), a fine of 300 to 3700 Euro is imposed; if there has already been one such violation, the driver must attend an appointment with a psychologist (approximate fee of 200 Euro). A third similar violation committed by the driver within a period of two years will result in revocation of the driver's licence.

The main traffic regulations in Innsbruck are the same as in the rest of Europe. However, it is useful to know that some violations are penalised much more severely:

• It is strictly forbidden to use a mobile phone without a hands-free system while driving; the system may only be operated with one hand;
• Before starting the car, you must fasten your seat belt - this is required by law;
• Children under 12 years may only be transported in special seats;
• You are obliged to have a high-visibility vest and a first-aid kit in a rigid box in your motor vehicle.

When starting your car journey in and around Innsbruck in a hire car, you should be aware that motorists are permitted to use only unleaded petrol and diesel fuel. There are also several gas filling stations in Innsbruck. Leaded petrol has been withdrawn from sale and is forbidden for use. It is permitted to carry no more than 10 litres of petrol in a canister in the car. Almost all filling stations operate automatically, and payment is accepted by credit card.
