Practical Information for Drivers

Penalties

  • For exceeding the speed limit in built-up areas - from 21 Euro up to revocation of the driver's licence for a six-week period;
  • Blood alcohol content level up to:
  • 1,19% is punishable by a fine of up to 3700 Euro along with revocation of the driver's licence for a period of 1 to 3 months;
  • 1,59% is punishable by a fine of 1200 to 4400 Euro along with revocation of the driver's licence for a period of 4 months;
  • 1,6% is punishable by a fine of up to 5900 Euro along with revocation of the driver's licence for a period of 6 months. The same applies in the event of refusal to take a blood alcohol content test.

Speed limits

When renting a car in Innsbruck, it is useful to be aware of the speed limit regulations on all types of roads. If there are no special signs on the roads, the following limits apply:

  • Motor vehicles up to 3,5 tons and motorcycles: in built-up areas - up to 50 km/h, outside the city - up to 100 km/h, on autobahns - 130 km/h.
  • Motor vehicles up to 3,5 tons with trailers: in built-up areas - 50 km/h, outside the city - up to 80 km/h, on motorways - up to 100 km/h.

The minimum speed limit on the autobahns is 60 km/h.

Parking

If you decide to park your hire car in the streets of Innsbruck, please remember that parking there is fee-based and time-limited:

  • Parking for a 10-minute period is free of charge;
  • Parking for a 30-minute period costs 1 Euro;
  • Parking for a 60-minute period costs 2 Euro;
  • Parking for a 90-minute period costs 3 Euro;
  • Parking for a 180-minute period costs 4 Euro.

If you are looking for a longer period of parking, please make use of underground garages or larger car parks. A garage fee is up to 25 Euro (per day), and a surface parking fee is up to 3 Euro (per day). Fee-based parking spaces within the city area are marked with a blue line. To pay for parking, please go to a "Traffic" shop, where you will receive a voucher-timer for a specified period. Free parking is marked with a white line.

Admissible alcohol limit while hiring a car in Innsbruck

The upper limit is 0,49%, but for drivers with less than 24 months' driving experience the admissible limit is 0,01%.

If the blood alcohol content is higher (0,5% to 0,7%), a fine of 300 to 3700 Euro is imposed; if there has already been one such violation, the driver must attend an appointment with a psychologist (approximate fee of 200 Euro). A third similar violation committed by the driver within a period of two years will result in revocation of the driver's licence.

Traffic regulations

The main traffic regulations in Innsbruck are the same as in the rest of Europe. However, it is useful to know that some violations are penalised much more severely:

  • It is strictly forbidden to use a mobile phone without a hands-free system while driving; the system may only be operated with one hand;
  • Before starting the car, you must fasten your seat belt - this is required by law;
  • Children under 12 years may only be transported in special seats;
  • You are obliged to have a high-visibility vest and a first-aid kit in a rigid box in your motor vehicle.

Fuel cost

When starting your car journey in and around Innsbruck in a hire car, you should be aware that motorists are permitted to use only unleaded petrol and diesel fuel. There are also several gas filling stations in Innsbruck. Leaded petrol has been withdrawn from sale and is forbidden for use. It is permitted to carry no more than 10 litres of petrol in a canister in the car. Almost all filling stations operate automatically, and payment is accepted by credit card. The approximate fuel cost is as follows:

Fuel Cost
Petrol 95 1, 34 EUR
Petrol 98 1,48 EUR
Diesel fuel 1,33 EUR

Innsbruck car rental — FAQ

Book as early as possible for peak periods — winter ski season and summer holidays — to secure the vehicle and best rates. Aim to reserve 6–12 weeks ahead for high season; for off-peak travel, booking 1–2 weeks in advance usually suffices. Last-minute bookings are possible but often more expensive and limited in choice.
A security deposit is usually a pre-authorisation or hold; when the hire ends the operator releases it and your bank processes the refund. Expect the funds to clear in about 7–14 business days, though timing depends on your card issuer. To avoid the hold entirely consider no-deposit / no-credit-card deals.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum sum you must pay if the hire car is damaged or stolen. In Austria it typically ranges from EUR 500–2,000 depending on vehicle and class. You remain liable up to that amount unless you purchase extra collision/theft cover or a zero-excess waiver to reduce or remove the excess.
Most rental desks prefer a credit card for the security hold and identification. Some companies accept debit cards or cash with additional ID, insurance proof and larger deposits. If you need to avoid a card hold, look for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals which explicitly permit alternative payment arrangements.
Prices vary by season and car type; a realistic average for Austria is about EUR 50 per day for a small to mid-size car when booked in advance. Budget models can start from around EUR 30 daily off-peak, while larger or premium vehicles and peak-period hires may exceed EUR 80–100 per day.
At Innsbruck Airport (INN) you will find desks for National, Alamo, Enterprise, Sixt, Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget and Rent Easy Tirol, all located in/near the arrivals area with clear signage; counters, key collection points and return instructions are typically shown at the terminal and on your booking confirmation.
Bookingcar compares multiple suppliers so you can see price, vehicle and policy differences at a glance, filter for extras, and book securely online. We highlight insurance options, fuel rules and return details, offer local customer support and often list flexible or refundable rates to give you confidence and save time when arranging your hire.
Late returns usually incur additional charges — extra hourly or daily rates and possible penalty fees — and can affect insurance cover. Contact the rental operator immediately if you will be late; arranging a new return time in advance often reduces costs and avoids escalation. Always check the contract for exact late-return terms.
Good options include Congress Garage (Congressparkgarage) near Maria‑Theresien‑Strasse, the Rathausgalerien Parkhaus, Sillpark shopping centre car park and the Park & Ride at Messe Innsbruck. Pay at machines or use local parking apps, observe the short‑stay "Kurzparkzone" rules in the centre and use P+R facilities for cheaper longer stays.
Driving into neighbouring EU/Schengen countries is usually permitted but you must declare your plans when booking and get written permission. Cross‑border travel can attract surcharges, require additional insurance or paperwork (such as a green card) and some countries may be excluded, so confirm terms with the rental company before you set off.
Typical limits are:
  • Built-up areas: 50 km/h
  • Rural roads: 100 km/h
  • Motorways (Autobahn): 130 km/h
Always follow local signs, as lower limits may apply near schools, in tunnels, on certain motorway sections, or in bad weather. Temporary roadworks zones are strictly enforced with cameras.
