For Kenya, it is best to book a hire car 2-4 weeks before your trip, especially for Nairobi, Mombasa and peak safari seasons (July-October and December). For 4x4s and vehicles with a driver-guide, try to book even earlier, around 6-8 weeks ahead, as availability is limited and prices can rise close to the travel dates.
In Kenya, the deposit is normally released by the rental company when the car is returned in good condition, fuel and extras checked. Card issuers then take around 3-10 working days to clear the hold in Kenyan Shillings (KES). With some no-deposit offers, only preauthorisation for fuel or extras may be held and released more quickly.
The excess is the maximum amount you must pay towards damage or theft before insurance covers the rest. In Kenya, excesses typically range from KES 60,000 to KES 250,000, higher for 4x4s. If a covered incident happens, this sum is charged or kept from your deposit. You can often buy extra cover to reduce or fully protect the excess.
Most Kenyan suppliers prefer a credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. Some agencies do accept debit cards, and a few partners offer no-deposit, no-credit-card deals, usually on selected vehicle groups, with proof of income or additional identification. Always check payment rules in the conditions before booking to avoid issues at the counter.
Typical daily rates in Kenya vary with the season and car type. A small city car often costs around KES 5,000–7,000 per day, a standard SUV about KES 9,000–13,000, while a safari-ready 4x4 with higher clearance can be KES 12,000–20,000 per day. Prices may be higher over Christmas, Easter and the main migration season.

Fines in Kenya are often issued as on-the-spot tickets, with fixed penalties for many offences: speeding, dangerous overtaking, using a mobile phone, or not wearing a seat belt. Amounts vary but can reach several thousand KES, and serious cases may go to court. Unpaid fines can sometimes be passed to the rental company and charged to your card, plus administration fees.
Kenya applies a strict drink-driving policy, with a legal limit of about 0.08% blood alcohol concentration. Police may use breathalysers at checkpoints, particularly at night and around cities. Penalties for exceeding the limit can include heavy fines in KES, possible imprisonment and licence consequences. Because enforcement can be firm, the safest option is not to drink at all if you intend to drive.
Fuel prices in Kenya change frequently, with monthly adjustments. As a guide, petrol often costs around KES 180–220 per litre and diesel about KES 160–210 per litre, depending on the region and current regulation. Card payment is common in cities, but in more remote areas it is sensible to carry sufficient cash in KES and keep your tank topped up.
Kenya uses pay-as-you-go tolls on certain major highways, such as expressways around Nairobi. You pay per use, usually in KES cash, mobile money or via an electronic tag, depending on the road. Rental cars may or may not include a tag, so check in advance. Tolls are not included in your rental price and must be paid as you drive through the plazas.
