Practical Information for Drivers

Traffic Laws

Although driving on the roads of Nairobi may seem chaotic, the city does have traffic regulations that drivers must follow:

  • It is forbidden to drive a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
  • Drivers are required to be tested on their knowledge of traffic rules once every 3 years;
  • Parking is not permitted in unauthorised places;
  • You must not park on the pavement or walk on the carriageway;
  • Do not exceed the speed limit.

Parking

Almost all parking spaces in Nairobi require payment. You may not leave a vehicle in a parking space for longer than 3 hours. To pay for parking, use special parking discs, which can be purchased at roadside shops and petrol stations. On the disc you mark the time of arrival, which is used to calculate how long you may park and the parking fee.

Speed limits that rental cars in Nairobi must not exceed

High speeds are not encouraged on roads in and around Nairobi. The following speed limits apply, depending on the type of road:

  • The highest permitted speed on motorways is 100 km/h;
  • Within the city you are allowed to drive at up to 55 km/h;
  • Outside built-up areas on unpaved roads you may drive at up to 70 km/h;
  • The maximum speed in protected areas is 25 km/h.

Toll roads

When travelling in or around Nairobi in your own car, you do not need to worry about paying tolls on specific roads. In the city and throughout the country, roads with poor-quality surfaces are common, which is likely to be the reason for the lack of toll highways and motorways. Within the city limits and beyond, you will not have to pay to use the roads.

Nairobi car rental — FAQ

Booking a Nairobi rental early really helps. For peak seasons, public holidays, and big events, try to reserve 4-6 weeks before arrival to secure better prices and vehicle choice. Outside busy periods, 1-2 weeks is usually enough, but last-minute bookings can be expensive and certain vehicle types may sell out quickly.
In Nairobi, security deposits are normally released after the vehicle is checked in. Most banks and card providers process the refund within about 7-14 business days, depending on their policies and currency conversions. Choosing no-deposit / no-credit-card deals can help you avoid blocking funds on your card altogether.
The excess is the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen. In Kenya, typical rental excesses range roughly from KES 80,000 to KES 250,000, varying by car class and supplier. If a covered incident occurs, you pay up to this limit. You can usually reduce or even bring this excess close to zero by buying additional insurance coverage.
Most Nairobi rental desks prefer a major credit card in the main driver’s name. It is used to secure the security deposit and any extras. Some partners, however, accept debit cards or cash with stricter conditions. Look for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals on our site to find suppliers offering more flexible payment options.
Prices vary by season, vehicle type, and rental length. As a general guide, a small economy car in Nairobi often starts around KES 5,000-7,500 per day, while SUVs or 4x4s can range from about KES 9,000 to KES 18,000 per day. Longer rentals and early bookings usually secure better daily rates than short, last-minute hires.
Bookingcar lets you compare multiple Nairobi suppliers in one place. You can see clear pricing, fuel and mileage rules, and insurance options before you book. We show verified reviews, offer flexible filters for SUVs, 4x4s, or compact cars, and often feature special promotions and inclusive packages that help you avoid unexpected costs at the rental desk.
Returning your Nairobi rental late can lead to extra charges. Most companies apply hourly late fees and may charge an extra rental day once you exceed a grace period. If you realize you will be delayed, contact the rental operator immediately; they may extend the contract, which is usually cheaper and helps you avoid breach-of-agreement penalties.
Nairobi offers both street and secure off-street parking. Popular options include CBD parking areas like Sunken Parking on Aga Khan Walk, the Kenyatta International Convention Centre parking, Diamond Plaza parking in Parklands, and major mall car parks such as Sarit Centre and The Hub Karen. These usually charge hourly or daily fees and often have attendants and CCTV.
Cross-border travel from Nairobi may be allowed but always needs approval. Many companies permit trips to neighboring countries like Tanzania or Uganda only if declared in advance and noted in the contract. Expect extra insurance, written authorization, and sometimes a cross-border fee. Never cross any border without the rental company’s prior, written permission.
  • Built-up areas (towns and cities): usually 50 km/h
  • Rural single-carriageway roads: around 80 km/h unless otherwise signed
  • Major highways and some bypasses: typically 100 km/h for cars
  • Near schools, markets and speed bumps: lower posted limits such as 30–40 km/h, strictly enforced
Always follow local signs as they override general limits.

"We were a group of friends exploring Nairobi and the car handled city traffic and short trips out of town really well. Staff were welcoming and flexible with our timing, but the interior could have been cleaned more thoroughly before we collected it."
