Practical Information for Drivers
Traffic Laws
Although driving on the roads of Nairobi may seem chaotic, the city does have traffic regulations that drivers must follow:
- It is forbidden to drive a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
- Drivers are required to be tested on their knowledge of traffic rules once every 3 years;
- Parking is not permitted in unauthorised places;
- You must not park on the pavement or walk on the carriageway;
- Do not exceed the speed limit.
Parking
Almost all parking spaces in Nairobi require payment. You may not leave a vehicle in a parking space for longer than 3 hours. To pay for parking, use special parking discs, which can be purchased at roadside shops and petrol stations. On the disc you mark the time of arrival, which is used to calculate how long you may park and the parking fee.
Speed limits that rental cars in Nairobi must not exceed
High speeds are not encouraged on roads in and around Nairobi. The following speed limits apply, depending on the type of road:
- The highest permitted speed on motorways is 100 km/h;
- Within the city you are allowed to drive at up to 55 km/h;
- Outside built-up areas on unpaved roads you may drive at up to 70 km/h;
- The maximum speed in protected areas is 25 km/h.
Toll roads
When travelling in or around Nairobi in your own car, you do not need to worry about paying tolls on specific roads. In the city and throughout the country, roads with poor-quality surfaces are common, which is likely to be the reason for the lack of toll highways and motorways. Within the city limits and beyond, you will not have to pay to use the roads.
Nairobi car rental — FAQ
What drivers say about Nairobi
"Our family trip in Nairobi went smoothly, car was clean and child seats ready. Staff were friendly and patient, only downside was a longer wait at pick-up."
"We visited Nairobi as a couple and the car made it easy to explore the city and nearby parks. Service was polite and efficient, just wish the fuel policy had been explained more clearly at the desk."
"We were a group of friends exploring Nairobi and the car handled city traffic and short trips out of town really well. Staff were welcoming and flexible with our timing, but the interior could have been cleaned more thoroughly before we collected it."
