Why drive in Oman
Trace the coast from Muscat to Sur, calling at Bimmah sinkhole, Wadi Shab and quiet beaches that buses skip. The open roads make it easy to stop at forts and coastal villages on the way.
Drive inland to Jebel Shams and Nizwa, or follow desert pistes towards the Wahiba Sands. A rental gives you the freedom to time wadis, markets and viewpoints to the cooler hours of the day.

Practical Information for Drivers
Basic traffic rules in Oman
- Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road.
- You must give way, unlike in many other Middle Eastern countries. This is usually signalled by briefly flashing your headlights twice.
- Pedestrians have priority when crossing the carriageway.
- If the car in front is flashing its hazard warning lights, it indicates an obstruction on the road.
- On roundabouts, vehicles already on the roundabout have priority.
- If a junction is not controlled by traffic lights or signs, drivers decide among themselves who will pass first.
Why drivers of rented cars are fined in Oman
- Speeding.
- Not wearing a seat belt.
- Talking on a mobile phone while driving.
- Arguing with the police officer on duty. If you insist on disputing the situation on the spot, you may receive a court summons.
After a speed violation has been recorded by radar and photographed, a ticket is issued. It is then sent to the company from which the car was rented. Fines are high.
Speed limit
- 50-60 km/h – the maximum speed in built-up areas.
- 100-120 km/h – on highways.
Parking
Parking is prohibited in the historic city centre. The police tow away improperly parked cars to prevent traffic jams.
What drivers say about Oman
"Friendly staff and car was clean, check-out was quick. But pick-up directions at Muscat airport were a bit confusing and we had to call twice to find the desk."
"I was very satisfied with the rental. Booking was simple, the car was almost new and economical, and the staff at Muscat airport explained everything clearly. Pick-up and return were fast, and there were no surprise charges on my card afterwards."
"I travelled with a friend and we were impressed. The car was spotless, fuel efficient, and perfect for long drives between Muscat and Nizwa. Staff were patient, helped us inspect the car, and returning it was easy. The price matched the quote and we felt safe the whole trip."
