Practical Information for Drivers

Fines for traffic violations in Prague

In most cases, the police in Prague are extremely welcoming and courteous, so drivers should be polite in return. If you are stopped for an offence, it is better to admit your mistake and be apologetic. This is the best way to receive the lowest possible fine.

Illegal parking From 50 to 100 Euro
Overtaking on the wrong side From 100 Euro
Driving through a red light From 100 Euro
Unfastened seat belt 50 Euro
Carrying children without a suitable child seat or booster 100 Euro

It is strongly recommended not to start arguing about your rights. If you insult a police officer, your driving licence can simply be taken away and the case sent to court.

Speed limits in Prague

There are specific speed limits both within Prague and throughout the Czech Republic. Always observe the speed limit, as the police often carry out speed checks with speed guns. You should also pay close attention to road signs, as the permitted speed can change on some stretches of road.

  • The maximum speed within the city limits of Prague is 50 km/h.
  • The maximum speed allowed outside built-up areas is 90 km/h.
  • You may drive at up to 130 km/h on motorways.

If the weather is bad, be especially careful. If visibility on the road is less than 50 metres, your speed must not exceed 50 km/h in any circumstances.

Parking in Prague

Parking a car in Prague is generally not a problem. There are enough parking spaces for everyone. There are a few types of street parking in the city centre:

  • Orange parking zone

You can park here for no longer than 2 hours. The cost of one hour is 1.5 Euro.

  • Green parking zone

You may park for up to 6 hours in this zone. One hour of parking will cost you only 1 Euro.

  • Blue parking zone

You are not allowed to park a rental car in blue zones. These spaces are reserved for company cars and local residents. Visitors to the city are not permitted to park here.

There are a large number of car parks on the outskirts of Prague, and these are also affordable. On working days, one hour of parking costs no more than 0.5 Euro. At weekends and at night, these car parks are free. There are ticket machines for paying for parking at all car parks. Do not forget to place the parking ticket under your car's windscreen!

Permitted blood alcohol level

Prague is very strict in this respect: no alcohol is allowed in a driver’s blood. Otherwise, the driver faces serious penalties:

  • A blood alcohol level of up to 0.03 per mille carries a fine of between 100 and 500 Euro and disqualification from driving for up to one year.
  • If the blood alcohol level is more than 0.03 per mille, the fine can increase to 5000 Euro, and the disqualification period can be up to 10 years.

Such strict penalties are probably the reason why it is very rare to see a drunk driver on the roads of Prague.

Road traffic regulations in Prague

The road traffic regulations in Prague are the same as in the rest of Europe. However, it is necessary to pay attention to a few details, especially if you have hired a car for the whole family and are travelling with children:

  • Child seats and boosters

Children who are shorter than 150 cm must be carried only in appropriate child seats or booster seats. The child’s age is not important; their height is the key factor.

  • Dipped headlights

In Prague, drivers must always remember to switch on dipped headlights. Dipped headlights must be on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.

  • Fog lights

Fog lights must not be used without good reason. They may only be switched on in poor visibility, including fog.

Cost of fuel in Prague

There are many filling stations, including LPG stations, within the city limits. Fuel quality is very high, and prices are similar at all filling stations, so you can refuel confidently at any of them.

  • The cost of one litre of 95 fuel is 1.39 Euro
  • One litre of 98 fuel costs 1.47 Euro
  • The price for one litre of diesel fuel is 1.36 Euro.

Monitor the fuel level in the tank, as it is prohibited to carry fuel in cans.

Prague car rental — FAQ

For Prague, booking 2-4 weeks in advance usually secures the best mix of price and choice, especially for compact and automatic cars. During peak times like summer, Easter, Christmas markets, and big events, consider reserving 6-8 weeks ahead. Last-minute bookings are possible, but expect higher rates, limited models, or inconvenient pickup times.
Most Prague rental companies release the security deposit within 7-14 business days after you return the car, provided there is no new damage, fines, or fuel shortage. Bank processing times can add a few extra days. If you choose no-deposit / no-credit-card deals, the standard security hold is minimized or not required at all.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen. In the Czech Republic, it often ranges roughly from CZK 10,000 to CZK 40,000, depending on car class and supplier. The insurer or rental company covers the rest. You can usually reduce or even bring the excess close to zero by purchasing extra insurance coverage.
Most Prague rental desks prefer a major credit card in the main driver's name for the security deposit. Some providers, however, accept debit cards or cash-like alternatives if certain conditions are met. Look specifically for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals on our platform, where the hold is reduced or structured differently.
Expect an average price of about CZK 700-1,200 per day for a small or compact car in Prague, depending on season, demand, and how early you book. Larger vehicles, automatics, and SUVs can cost CZK 1,500-2,500 daily or more. Longer rentals, like weekly or monthly deals, often reduce the effective daily rate significantly.
At Prague - Airport (PRG), you will find well-known international and local brands, including National, Sixt, Hertz, Enterprise, Avis, Europcar, Budget, Alamo, and Taggart airport, each with desks in or near the terminal and a short walk to the dedicated car rental parking areas.
Bookingcar lets you compare multiple Prague suppliers in one search, showing clear fuel policies, mileage limits, and deposit conditions. You benefit from competitive prices, user reviews, and flexible cancellation on many offers. Our multilingual support and transparent terms help you avoid surprises at pickup and choose the car that fits your trip and budget.
If you return your Prague rental late, most companies charge extra, typically per hour and then per additional rental day once a threshold is reached. Unauthorised delays can also void some insurance conditions. If you realize you will be late, contact the rental operator or Bookingcar support immediately to adjust the contract and minimize penalties.
In central Prague, look for paid car parks such as Rudolfinium Garage, Palladium Parking, Kotva Parking, and Parking Centrum Florenc, which offer secure multi-storey spaces. Street parking is regulated with blue, purple, and orange zones; you usually pay at machines or via mobile app and must respect posted time limits and resident-only restrictions.
Most Prague rentals allow cross-border travel to many European countries, but you must declare your plans when booking and at pickup. Some destinations are restricted or require written permission, extra insurance, or a fee. The rental agreement will list allowed countries, so always check it carefully before driving outside the Czech Republic.
  • Urban areas: 50 km/h, unless otherwise posted
  • Rural roads: 90 km/h, unless signs indicate a different limit
  • Expressways (dual carriageways): generally 110 km/h
  • Motorways (dálnice): normally 130 km/h
Always follow local signs, as temporary or local limits override the general rules.

"As a couple exploring Prague and nearby castles, we found booking car very practical and affordable. Pickup and return at the airport were simple. Only minor issue was that navigation was slightly outdated, so we sometimes relied on our phones instead."
