Toll roads for leased cars in Slovenia

To drive freely on Slovenian motorways you must buy a paper vignette. Its cost depends on the weight of the vehicle and the length of time it will be used on toll roads. The rates are shown in the table below:

You should also be aware that using the Karawanken Tunnel is subject to a separate toll. Where can you buy a vignette? The document granting the right to use toll roads can be bought at large shopping centres, petrol stations and border crossing points. The vignette is affixed to the inside of the windscreen and must be removed after expiry.

Traffic Laws

  • In Slovenia there are strict traffic regulations, and violations are subject to significant fines. For example, driving on the motorway with an invalid vignette will cost the driver €300–800.
  • Dipped-beam headlights must be switched on at all times while driving. Failure to comply is punishable by a fine of €40 when driving during the day and €120 when driving at night.
  • The permitted level of alcohol in the driver's blood must not exceed 0.5 ‰. Depending on the level of intoxication, a drink-driving offence is punishable by a fine ranging from €180 to €1,200.
  • For each passenger not wearing a seat belt the driver will be fined €120.
  • If the car is carrying children under 12 years of age, they must be seated in appropriate child restraint systems. Breaching the rules on the transport of children will cost the driver €120.

Parking for cars rented in Slovenia

In the major cities of the country there is an extensive network of paid car parks equipped with ticket machines. Payment can be made by text message from a mobile phone or, alternatively, in cash. The approximate cost of parking is €0.4 per hour; you can leave the car for half an hour, an hour or two hours.

If the sign does not specify the permitted parking time, cars may be left free of charge on public holidays and at weekends. On working days there are time restrictions, typically from 19:00 to 9:00. In small towns there are parking areas where free parking is allowed from 12:00 to 13:30.

Improperly parked cars may be clamped or towed, and can even be confiscated. There are also fines for violations:

  • The fine for incorrect parking is €40.
  • For a single minor violation the fine will be €35; on public holidays and at weekends this amount is doubled.
  • A repeated breach of parking rules will cost the driver €65.

The cost of fuel

While driving in Slovenia you will find many filling stations offering diesel fuel and unleaded petrol of grades 95 and 98. You will also find stations where vehicles can be refuelled with gas. Fuel prices in Slovenia are broadly similar throughout the country and are approximately as follows:

In Ljubljana and at Ljubljana Airport cars can sell out in peak periods, so book earlier if you need an automatic, a larger vehicle or child seats. Last-minute bookings are possible but often more expensive and with fewer options.
In Slovenia, rental companies normally release the security deposit within 3–10 working days after you return the car, provided there is no new damage, traffic fines or missing fuel. Your bank or card issuer may then take a few extra days to show the funds as available. Some special no-deposit deals avoid a traditional hold, but terms vary by supplier.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you pay if the rental car is damaged or stolen. In Slovenia it typically ranges from about EUR 600 to EUR 1,500, depending on vehicle class.
