Why drive in Taiwan
Taiwan s coastal and mountain roads make driving rewarding, from Taipei down the east coast through Hualien and Taitung. With a car you can linger at small fishing harbours, hot springs and viewpoints over the Pacific.
Inland, self drive access to Taroko Gorge, Sun Moon Lake and Alishan means you are not tied to tour buses. A rental lets you time sunrise viewpoints, tea farm visits and night market stops in smaller towns more freely.

Practical Information for Drivers
Rules of the road for cars rented in Taiwan
Rent a vehicle in Taiwan only if you can pay for fuel, which costs around 33 TWD per litre at petrol stations in the country. A driving licence is issued to drivers here who are at least 25 years old, and a security deposit is required. Traffic in Taiwan keeps to the right, and you may only overtake another vehicle on the left.
When driving on Taiwan's roads, the driver and all passengers must wear seat belts. When travelling at night or in poor visibility during the day, you must switch on dipped headlights. The penalty for violating traffic rules can be up to an astronomical sum of 1,000 €. The permitted blood alcohol level for drivers in Taiwan is 0.0 ‰.
Speed Limits
Although there are not many road signs on the main roads and local drivers often violate traffic rules, there are still speed limits in force. On intercity highways you can drive at speeds of up to 80 km/h, and on motorways speeds can reach 100-120 km/h. On urban roads, the permitted speed limit is generally between 40 and 80 km/h.
As for the condition of local roads, the overall situation is satisfactory. Modern highways are in better condition. Older roads, however, often have poor surfaces. If a motorist is travelling along an old road, it is advisable to adhere to the speed limits, which are around 20 km/h.
Fines for traffic violations in Taiwan
- Violating any rules of the road in Taiwan is strictly prohibited and punishable by substantial fines. For example, exceeding the speed limit by as little as 1 km/h can result in a fine of 3,000 TWD.
- Taiwan also imposes severe penalties for using a mobile phone while driving.
- In addition to monetary penalties, penalty points are also issued. If the number reaches a record level, the vehicle owner is temporarily deprived of the right to drive.
- For illegal parking, the driver faces a fine of $ 16 and the vehicle may be towed away.
Parking
Parking a rented car in Taiwan can be difficult, especially in the centre of large cities where there are many people. This is particularly true near the car parks of large financial institutions, shopping centres and entertainment complexes. To avoid problems, it is worth looking in advance for parking on the outskirts, away from the centre. On some streets in major cities, you can park your car on the street, but you must always park in the direction of traffic. However, it is more reliable to leave the car in specially designated parking areas.
