• In Cairo, traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road;
• overtaking is permitted only on the right;
• passengers must wear seat belts;
• children may only be transported using appropriate child restraints.

Traffic police in Cairo have the right to issue penalties for traffic violations without stopping the driver. They simply write down the vehicle registration number in their notebook and then summon the driver to the police station, where the fine is issued.

It may be noted that in Egypt traffic fines are among the lowest, with an average amount ranging from 100 to 500 pounds.

In Cairo and its surroundings, the following speed limits apply:

• in the city, traffic is allowed at speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour;
• outside the city — up to 90 kilometres per hour;
• on motorways and high-speed roads — from 100 to 120 kilometres per hour.

At present in Cairo the authorities are relatively lenient about drink-driving controls. Local police do not usually require drivers to use a breathalyser or undergo a special medical examination, but it is possible that in the near future, due to the frequent accidents caused by drunk foreigners, the relevant provisions will be added to the traffic regulations.
