The speed limit in China
When driving a rental car on Chinese roads, the driver is required to observe the speed limits. Please strictly observe the following speed limits in different areas:
Within built-up areas | Outside built-up areas | Speeding |
One-way streets – 30 km/h | On motorways – 120 km/h | Up to 30% over the limit – fine of 200–300 yuan |
Other roads – 70 km/h | Other roads – 80 km/h | 2–3 times over the limit – 12 penalty points and a driving ban |
Expressways – 100 km/h | If an accident occurs – possible imprisonment |
Parking
In densely populated China, parking is a particularly important issue. Usually, when buying a car in China, the law requires the purchaser to buy a parking space at the same time. This helps to avoid problems with finding parking, especially in major cities. The situation becomes more complicated when you need to find a temporary parking place for a rental car.
In some Chinese cities there is a rule that you can leave your car on the street, in any empty marked space. Cars must be parked only in the direction of traffic. If the driver is concerned about the safety of the car, they can look for paid parking. In every Chinese city there are special parking areas whose boundaries are marked with solid lines.
Traffic Laws
In China, the rules of the road differ in some respects from those in Europe. The main features are left-hand drive vehicles with right-hand traffic, and overtaking on the left. Before overtaking, the driver must indicate with the left turn signal and may give a sound signal. If it is dark outside, the driver of a rented car in China should repeatedly switch between main beam and dipped beam. When driving on a lit road at night, the driver must:
- Wear a seat belt, and ensure that this example is followed by all adults and children taller than 135 cm and over 12 years old. Younger passengers must be secured with an appropriate child restraint system.
- Keep dipped headlights switched on at all times.
- Wear comfortable footwear that allows safe driving. Wearing flip-flops while driving is strictly prohibited.
- Not drink, eat or smoke while driving.
Fines for traffic violations in China
Compliance with traffic regulations in China is monitored by cameras installed everywhere. Traffic control officers usually appear on the road only in emergencies or in the event of an accident. In addition, traffic police regulate traffic at busy junctions.
- If the driver violates a traffic rule, a text message is usually sent to their mobile phone 2–3 days after the incident. A notice of the violation can also be sent to the car owner's home address. Fines of any amount can be paid online or in cash.
- If you need information about fines issued, the driver can call a special number and, by giving the vehicle registration number, obtain full information about themselves and the car.
The traffic police do not have the right to stop drivers on the roads without cause. Exceptions are special roadside checks that take place in China from time to time. If a road traffic officer stops a driver, the driver has the full right to record the conversation on video as evidence. Courts in China consider traffic violations objectively, based on the facts presented. After this, a decision is made and a fine is issued, the amount of which depends on the nature of the offence and the extent of the damage.
რას ამბობენ მძღოლები ჩინეთი-ის შესახებ
"Family road trip went really smoothly. Car was clean, spacious enough for two kids and luggage, and pick-up at the airport was quick. Staff kindly helped us install the child seat. Only downside was unclear signs for the return area, so we circled once before finding it."
"Nice car and smooth process for us as a couple, but pick-up took a bit longer than expected."
"We hired a car for a weekend with friends and overall it was fun and convenient. Car was in good condition and fuel efficient. However, the deposit took longer than we liked to be released, which made us a little nervous after returning the vehicle."
