In Latvia you are allowed to drive after drinking a small amount of alcohol. However, the blood alcohol level must not exceed 0.5 ppm. If you break this rule, a number of penalties may apply: a fine of 500 LVL, arrest for up to 15 days, and disqualification from driving.

Car hire in Jurmala is available to drivers over 19 years of age with at least one year of driving experience. You must have a credit card and a valid international driving licence.

• Both the driver and passengers must wear seat belts.
• Dipped headlights must be used at all times, all year round.
• Do not use a radar detector.
• Window tinting standards: side windows - up to 30%, windscreen - up to 25%.
• The speed limit in built-up areas must not exceed 50 km/h, and outside resort areas - 90 km/h.

The city has both traditional manned fuel stations and automated self-service stations. You can pay by credit card or cash. A wide range of fuels is available: diesel, and petrol of grades 98, 95 and 92. The average cost of a litre of fuel is 1 LVL.

Tourists hiring a car in Jurmala should be aware that entry to the city from 1 April to 30 September is subject to an additional charge of 2 LVL. Exceptions to this rule are motorcyclists, drivers of tourist buses and electric vehicles.
