왜 말레이시아에서 운전하시나요?

A car in Malaysia makes it easy to leave 쿠알라룸푸르 for the cool Cameron Highlands, Ipohs cave temples or Penangs food streets. Highways are good, so you can link cities and hill stations without watching bus timetables.

On the east coast, driving lets you explore quieter beaches around Cherating, 쿠알라트렝가누 and Kota Bharu at your own pace. With a rental you can also reach rainforest gateways like Taman Negara and off the main line villages more freely.

If you rent a car in Malaysia, you need to know the features of driving

You can rent a car if you are between 23 and 70 years old and hold both a national driving licence and an International Driving Permit.

Malaysia is a former British colony, so people drive on the left and almost all cars are right-hand drive. The basic rules are similar to those in Europe, but there are some particular features of local driving:

  • drivers almost never stop at pedestrian crossings, only slowing down if they see pedestrians;
  • driving on the roads is generally unhurried, but also disorganised – cars can even drive along the central reservation;
  • there are many motorcyclists and cyclists, so you should be especially careful.

Fuel in Malaysia for leased cars

In the cities, and along national roads and motorways, there are filling stations every few kilometres. However, if you drive further into rural areas, they become less frequent.

You can refuel with 95 and 98 petrol, as well as diesel and gas. The price per litre of fuel is about half the global average – around $0.5. In the city, you can pay in cash in the national currency, the Malaysian ringgit, or by credit card. Outside the city, it is always better to carry enough cash to pay for fuel and toll roads.

Fines

The police in Malaysia are generally quite tolerant towards foreigners, but fines are still issued. They can only be paid via the website of the Malaysian Road Transport Department. The main types of penalties are:

  • for not wearing a seat belt – 30 ringgit;
  • for speeding – 90 ringgit;
  • for an illegal turn – 70 ringgit;
  • for making an illegal turn across a double line – 130 ringgit.

Toll roads

Roads within cities and states are generally free. Toll motorways mainly connect the major cities, and the toll can be charged either at the beginning or at the end of the route. Payment is accepted in cash in ringgit only. The average toll for a private road is 2 – 5 dollars.

말레이시아에서 렌탈 — FAQ

For Malaysia, booking 2 to 4 weeks before your trip usually secures the best rates and availability. During peak periods such as school holidays, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya or long weekends, try to reserve at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead, especially for MPVs, automatics and pick-ups, which sell out faster in popular areas like Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi.
In Malaysia, the security deposit is normally held on your card when you collect the car and released once the vehicle is checked in. Most banks lift the authorisation within 3 to 10 working days, though some international cards can take up to two weeks. If you choose a no-deposit deal, there may be a higher daily rate instead of a blocked amount.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you must pay towards damage or theft before the insurer covers the rest. In Malaysia it typically ranges from about RM1,500 to RM5,000, depending on vehicle class and supplier. You can usually reduce this to a much lower figure, or even close to zero, by purchasing optional excess-reduction or full-cover insurance when you book or at the counter.
Some Malaysian suppliers insist on a major credit card for the deposit, but others accept a debit card or offer special no-deposit, no-credit-card packages. These often have stricter conditions, such as lower vehicle classes, limited mileage or extra insurance. Always check the payment and deposit rules in the rental conditions before booking, as policies vary widely between companies and locations.
Average prices vary by season and city. As a rough guide, a small car in Malaysia usually starts around RM90–RM140 per day, a mid-size sedan about RM140–RM220 per day, and an MPV or SUV from RM220 upwards. Rates are often cheaper for longer rentals, while one-way hires, under-25 drivers and last-minute bookings can increase the final daily cost.
Bookingcar lets you compare prices from many Malaysian and international car hire brands in one search, so you can quickly see which offer suits you best. By showing different suppliers, vehicle types, fuel and mileage policies together, Bookingcar helps you find competitive deals and clearer total costs, instead of checking each company separately.
If you return your Malaysian rental car late, most companies charge an extra fee based on their hourly or daily rate, often after a short grace period of about 30–60 minutes. Keeping the car much longer than agreed can result in extra full rental days and may void some insurance cover. Always contact the rental office as early as possible if you expect to be delayed.
Typical speed limits in Malaysia are:
  • Urban areas: usually 50–60 km/h, depending on local signs
  • Rural roads: generally around 80–90 km/h
  • Federal and state roads: often 90 km/h unless otherwise posted
  • Highways / Expressways: up to 110 km/h, with some stretches lower due to roadworks or hazards
Always follow posted signs, as limits can change.
Traffic fines in Malaysia vary by offence and may be increased for repeat violations. Typical penalties include:
  • Speeding: around RM150–RM300 or more, depending on how far over the limit
  • Running red lights / illegal turns: significant fines and demerit points
  • Using a mobile phone while driving: fines and possible court action
Unpaid fines can be charged back to you by the rental company, often with an admin fee.
Malaysia enforces strict drink-driving laws. The general legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.05%. Penalties for exceeding this can include heavy fines, imprisonment, and driving disqualification, with harsher consequences if an accident or injury occurs. Police conduct roadside checks, especially at night and during festive seasons, so the safest approach is not to drink at all if you plan to drive.
Malaysia has regulated fuel prices that can change periodically. As a general indication, RON95 petrol is often around RM2.05–RM2.20 per litre, with RON97 and diesel usually priced higher. Exact prices vary over time and between fuel types, so check current rates at local petrol stations or online before your trip to estimate driving costs accurately.
Yes, many major highways in Malaysia, such as the North–South Expressway, use per-use tolls. Payment is mainly electronic using Touch ‘n Go or RFID systems; some plazas have limited cash lanes, but these are being phased out. Tolls are charged by distance and vehicle type, so longer journeys between cities like Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru will incur several toll payments.
