Traffic Laws

Seat belts must be worn by everyone, from the driver to passengers in the back seat. Failure to comply with this requirement incurs a fine of 30 KM. The same applies for incorrect carriage of children. A fine of 40 KM may also be imposed for violating tinting rules (only factory tinting is permitted) and for talking on a mobile phone without a hands-free device.

Speed limits for hire cars in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Your journey will go smoothly if you comply with local traffic regulations as closely as possible, particularly the standard speed limits. The maximum speeds for cars without incurring penalties are as follows:

  • within cities and other built-up areas - 50 km/h;
  • outside built-up areas - 80 km/h;
  • roads designated for cars - 100 km/h;
  • motorways - 130 km/h.

Permitted alcohol limits

It is essential that you do not break another important rule: the ban on drinking and driving. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, penalties depend on the level of alcohol in the blood:

  • up to 0.3 ‰ - permitted without penalties;
  • 0.31-1.00 ‰ - from 50 to 250 convertible marks (hereinafter - KM) (exchange rate set at around 0.56-0.58 euro for 1 KM);
  • 1.0-2.0 ‰ - from 100 to 300 KM;
  • more than 2.0 ‰ - from 400 to 1000 KM.

If a drunk driver causes harm to other road users, penalties are increased to 300-1000 KM (with a blood alcohol level at the same time of 0.31 to 2.0 ‰).
