Speed limitation
It's rather easy to memorize the speed limitations in Greece:
- The driving speed within inhabited areas must not exceed 50 km/h.
- Leaving these areas, you can drive up to 90 km/h.
- There are also roads in Greece where one can drive up to 110 km/h and highways with authorized speed 130 km/h.
We recommend you to pay close attention to traffic signs, as there are special speed limits in some road's sections.
Parking
In the center of Athens to find a park, even the charge, almost unreal. In Athens, there is such a practice: on even days of the week from entering the central part of the city allowed cars that have even numbers and the odd - on the contrary.
There is also a division between locals and visitors alike. Parking spaces designated for the Athenians blue markings, and for visitors to Athens - white. Maximum parking time - 3 hours, and the cost of it is 6 EUR.
Driving regulations
Greece is rather strict country concerning observance of the driving regulations, that's why you should be attentive to traffic signs and try not to violate these regulations as it can lead to serious fines.
Athens is the city with lots of sharp turns and a great number of crossings. Pay close attention to the road to avoid unpleasant situations (for example, do not start on green light at once as local citizens often try to cross on red).
All passengers in a car must be buckled up in their own seatbelts. Children can go in a car if only a child car seat is available. Also, children up to 11 years old must not go in a forward seat.
Use of radar detectors is strictly penalized (2000 EUR fine and confiscation of driver's license). It is prohibited to use hand-held cell phones while driving and also drive in daylight hours with dimmed headlights on.
Use the toll roads renting a car in Athens
You can travel around the country by two autobahns. One of them goes between Athens and Thessaloniki, and another one connects Athens with Peloponnesus. Driving the autobahn, watch the speed as its exceeding leads to serious fines. Entering the autobahn a fee must be paid. Fees depend on the type of vehicle and autobahn length (1-3 EUR). Payment is done with cash. Watch the fuel as the filling stations are opened till 7 pm. The exceptions are some huge cities and highways.
