"We booked a compact for a weekend escape and it was spotless, comfy and fuel‑efficient. Staff were friendly and pickup smooth, only wish the counter had been signed a bit more clearly."

"We rented a minivan for a ski weekend with friends and it was ideal: loads of room for gear, smooth drive in snowy conditions, and seamless pickup and return. Only minor thing was the USB ports were a bit limited for all our phones."
For the best rates in Canada, it is wise to book 3 to 6 weeks before your trip, and even earlier (up to 2–3 months) for peak periods such as July, August and Christmas/New Year. Last-minute bookings are possible in major cities and airports, but prices are usually higher and vehicle choice more limited.
Most Canadian rental companies place a temporary hold on your card at pick-up and release it within 3 to 10 business days after the car is returned, provided there is no new damage, fuel shortage or extra fees. Some partners offer no-deposit deals where the hold is much smaller or not taken at all.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you pay towards damage or theft before the insurer covers the rest. In Canada it typically ranges from CAD 500 to CAD 2,500, depending on vehicle type and provider. You can reduce or even bring this to zero by purchasing additional coverage such as collision damage waiver (CDW) or excess-reduction insurance.
Policies vary by supplier. Many Canadian rental companies still require a major credit card in the main driver’s name, especially at airports. However, some locations accept debit cards, higher cash deposits or offer no-credit-card and no-deposit deals for certain car types. Always check payment rules in the booking conditions before confirming.
Average prices vary by season and city. A compact or economy car typically costs about CAD 55–90 per day, while SUVs or minivans may range from CAD 90–160 per day. Winter, national holidays and remote locations can be more expensive. Longer rentals of a week or more often reduce the effective daily rate.
Bookingcar lets you compare prices from multiple Canadian and international rental brands in one search, helping you find cheaper options and special offers across airports and city locations. By viewing different inclusions, mileage limits and fuel policies side by side, you can quickly choose the deal that offers the best value for your budget.
If you return the car late in Canada, most companies apply an extra charge based on hourly or full-day rates, often after a short grace period (usually up to 29–60 minutes). Failing to advise the rental office may also affect insurance coverage. If you foresee a delay, contact the rental company as early as possible to adjust your contract.
Speed limits are posted in kilometres per hour (km/h). Typical limits are:
Urban/residential streets: 40–50 km/h
Undivided rural roads: 80 km/h
Divided rural highways: 90–100 km/h
Major expressways and motorways: 100–110 km/h (up to 120 km/h on some BC routes)
Always follow local signs, as limits can vary by province and road conditions.
Penalties differ across provinces but can include fines, demerit points, licence suspension and vehicle impoundment. Example ranges: speeding may cost from around CAD 80 to several hundred dollars; using a mobile phone while driving often exceeds CAD 200. Serious offences such as stunt driving or impaired driving can lead to large fines, court appearances and criminal charges.
The general legal limit in most of Canada is 0.08% BAC, but many provinces enforce stricter administrative penalties starting at 0.05% BAC. For novice or young drivers, a zero-tolerance rule often applies. Police frequently use roadside checks, and penalties can include high fines, licence suspension, vehicle impoundment and criminal records.
Fuel prices fluctuate by province and region. As a rough guide, in many parts of Canada regular petrol (gasoline) often costs around CAD 1.60–2.00 per litre, with slightly higher prices in remote or northern areas. Motorways and airport stations may be more expensive, so locals often refuel in town before returning a rental car.
Canada has relatively few toll roads. Most highways are free to use. Notable exceptions include Ontario’s Highway 407 ETR around Toronto, which uses electronic, per-use tolling, and a few toll bridges and tunnels in provinces such as Quebec and British Columbia. Rental companies may add administration fees if they are billed for your tolls later.
