Why drive in Cyprus

Driving in Cyprus makes it easy to link the beaches of Paphos, Limassol and Ayia Napa with mountain villages in the Troodos range. Take winding roads past vineyards and monasteries, stopping to wander stone lanes or try a village taverna.

With a hire car you can reach quieter coves on the Akamas Peninsula and viewpoints above Kyrenia or Larnaca when it suits you. Distances are short, so you can mix archaeological sites, countryside and seaside in a single relaxed day.

Practical Information for Drivers

Fines for violation of traffic regulations

Fines in Cyprus must not be paid on the spot. Tickets are paid at a police station or at the municipality. See the list of general fines:

  • Violation of overtaking rules - € 55
  • Smoking in a vehicle in the presence of a minor - € 85
  • Parking on pavements - € 85
  • Failing to give way to a pedestrian - € 85
  • Drinking or eating while driving - € 85
  • Passing through a red traffic light - € 85
  • Absence of a warning triangle - € 20
  • The speeding fine depends on the number of kilometres over the limit and can be 1-230 EUR. Exceeding the speed limit by 75% leads to a penalty, the amount of which is set by the court.

Although fines are not particularly high compared with other European countries, compliance with the traffic laws in Cyprus is strictly enforced. It is therefore best not to break them.

Speed limitations

Speed limits in Cyprus are indicated on traffic signs. General limits are 50 km/h within built-up areas, 80 km/h outside built-up areas and 100 km/h on motorways. Remember that the more you exceed the limit, the higher the fine. In addition, watch the traffic signs, as some sections of road have their own limits.

Driving regulations to note when renting a car in Cyprus

To make your trip as safe as possible, we recommend that you familiarise yourself with the general traffic laws in Cyprus.

Dipped headlights must be switched on from half an hour after sunset until half an hour before sunrise.

Children up to 10 years old may travel in a car only if a child safety seat is used. Children under 5 years old must not travel in a front seat.

All passengers must wear seat belts.

Using a mobile phone while driving a vehicle is also prohibited.

A vehicle must be equipped with two warning triangles.

Fuel

You can fill the vehicle with unleaded RON 95 or RON 98 petrol, or diesel. There are no LPG filling stations in Cyprus. Note that it is prohibited to transport petrol in a can.

Average prices for fuel:

  • RON95 petrol - 1.34 EUR
  • RON98 petrol - 1.39 EUR
  • Diesel - 1.41 EUR

Diesel is almost equivalent in price to petrol, so the choice of a car to rent in Cyprus is not affected by the engine type.

Renting in Cyprus — FAQ

In Cyprus, booking 2 to 4 weeks in advance usually secures the best choice and price, especially for automatic cars and summer travel (June to September). At Easter, August, and around public holidays, consider booking 4 to 6 weeks ahead, particularly for pick-up at Larnaca or Paphos airports or for popular resorts such as Ayia Napa and Paphos.
In Cyprus, the deposit is normally a pre-authorisation on your card. Once you return the car without new damage or unpaid charges, the provider asks your bank to release it, typically within 3 to 10 working days. Some banks may take longer, especially for international cards. With certain no-deposit deals, no pre-authorisation is taken at all.
The excess is the maximum amount you pay towards damage or theft before the insurer covers the rest. In Cyprus, typical excess levels range from about EUR 500 to EUR 1,500, higher for SUVs and luxury models. You can often reduce or remove the excess by buying extra cover, either from the rental company or an independent insurer when you book.
Many Cypriot suppliers still require a credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. However, some partners offer no-deposit, no-credit-card arrangements or accept certain debit cards, usually with conditions such as extra insurance or smaller vehicle classes. Always check payment rules in the booking conditions, and ensure your card has enough available funds before collection.
Prices vary by season, location, and car type. As a rough guide, a small car in Cyprus typically costs about EUR 25–40 per day in spring and autumn, rising to EUR 45–70 per day in peak summer. Off-peak winter rates can be lower. Larger vehicles, automatics, and convertibles cost more, and extra services (GPS, child seats) add to the total.
Bookingcar is a price-comparison service that gathers offers from many local and international car-hire companies in Cyprus. You can quickly compare prices, vehicle types, and rental conditions from different suppliers for places like Larnaca, Paphos, Limassol, and Nicosia, then choose the deal that best fits your budget, without paying more than you need to for the same car class.
If you bring the car back late in Cyprus, the company may charge extra hours or a full additional rental day, often at a higher local rate. Returning very late without notifying them can also lead to extra fees and may affect your insurance cover. If you expect a delay, contact the rental office as soon as possible to adjust your booking if they agree.
Standard speed limits in Cyprus are:
  • Motorways: usually 100 km/h (minimum 65 km/h)
  • Open roads outside towns: typically 80 km/h unless signed otherwise
  • Built-up areas (towns/villages): generally 50 km/h
  • Some residential or school zones: may be posted at 30–40 km/h
Always follow road signs, as local limits can differ from these general rules.
Cyprus has strict enforcement and on-the-spot fines. Typical penalties include:
  • Speeding: fines that increase with how far you exceed the limit, plus possible licence points
  • Mobile phone use without hands-free: substantial fine and points
  • Not wearing seat belts or improper child seats: fines and points
  • Drink-driving or dangerous driving: very heavy fines, licence suspension, and possible court action
Unpaid fines may be passed back to the rental company.
In Cyprus, the legal blood alcohol limit is generally 0.05% (0.5 g/l), or 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath. For some professional or novice drivers, lower effective thresholds and stricter enforcement may apply. Police regularly run roadside checks, especially at night and on weekends, and penalties for exceeding the limit are severe, including heavy fines, licence points, and possible disqualification.
Fuel prices change frequently, but as a general indication in recent periods, unleaded petrol in Cyprus often costs around EUR 1.40–1.70 per litre, with diesel sometimes slightly cheaper or similar. Prices can vary a little between urban and rural stations. Most filling stations near Larnaca and Paphos airports publish current rates clearly on roadside boards and at the pumps.
There are currently no toll roads or vignettes on the road network used by visitors in the Republic of Cyprus. Motorways between major cities such as Larnaca, Limassol, Nicosia, and Paphos are free to use. You simply drive on without paying at booths or needing an electronic tag, although you must still observe speed limits and other local traffic regulations.
