A characteristic feature of Indonesia in general, and its capital in particular, is the very high traffic density – the roads are literally overflowing with vehicles. Drivers are required to comply with the following rules:

• Within built-up areas the maximum permitted speed is 30–40 km/h;
• The maximum speed on country roads is 70 km/h;
• On motorways you may not drive faster than 100 km/h.

If you are going to rent a car in Jakarta, remember that the police in Indonesia take a very strict approach to drink-driving. The country is one of the few states that prohibit even minimal alcohol content in a driver's body. If it is found that there is more than 0.0 per mille of alcohol in the blood, the offender will face a fine.

The specifics of Indonesian driving can strongly impress drivers from Europe, particularly the number of vehicles, the behaviour of many local drivers in traffic, and the quality of the roads. However, in recent years the Indonesian authorities have been working to improve the road network and traffic regulations in the country's largest cities. Jakarta is one of them – the city has a toll ring road with a high-quality surface.

It should be noted that Jakarta is characterised by relatively low fuel prices for refuelling vehicles:

• The average price of petrol is $0.67 per litre;
• The average price of diesel fuel is $0.89 per litre.
