Car rental in Bali

The cost of fuel for vehicles on the island of Bali is fixed and the same at all petrol stations, regardless of their location.

On the roads of Bali you drive on the left. As for speed, the maximum permitted limit, regardless of the road, is 70 km/h. After sunset it gets very dark, so extra caution is required. Many drivers ignore the rules and do not switch on their lights, and some roads are very poorly lit. Why do local vehicle owners behave like this? They are used to being guided not by road markings and warning signs, but by the flow of traffic itself. They are also accustomed to signalling to one another with the horn.

On many of the main roads in Bali, the traffic direction may change during the day. Before lunchtime, the traffic may be one-way; after lunch, it may become two-way. There are usually no special warning signs about this. Traffic police have the right to fine any driver who fails to understand the situation.

Cars on the streets and roads of Bali may be left only in designated areas, which are marked in blue. Here you are allowed to leave the vehicle for a maximum of 1.5 hours. Long-term parking areas are marked in green. If a section is painted red, parking is strictly prohibited there.

The cost of car parking is the same in any part of Bali and is around 2000 rupees or $0.2.

When driving within built-up areas, the speed of the vehicle must not exceed 30–40 km/h. Outside residential areas, along main routes, you are allowed to increase your speed to 70 km/h. Some busy highways with first-class road surfaces allow traffic at speeds of up to 100 km/h.

Also remember that traffic here, as in many other Asian countries, is left-hand. In addition, local drivers rarely obey traffic rules or lane markings, and there are clearly not enough road signs and traffic lights in the country. It is possible that domestic animals may cross the road in front of you. Wild birds rarely cross your path, although such situations are not unusual for Indonesia.

Indonesian traffic control officers are entitled to fine a driver 750,000 rupees for talking on a mobile phone while driving. A fine of 100,000 rupees will be imposed on those who forget to switch on their daytime running lights. In Indonesia, they must be on at all times, regardless of time of day or weather conditions.

Substantial penalties are also imposed on those who drive a car with a broken headlight or without side mirrors. For this, the driver will have to pay about 250,000 rupees. The same amount applies for turning without using the indicators.
