Parking a rental car in Jerusalem

When choosing a place to park, you should take into account the colour of the pavement markings:

  • A red and white kerb indicates that parking is prohibited on this stretch of road.
  • Blue and white markings indicate paid parking.
  • A yellow and red kerb means the space is reserved for public transport.
  • Free parking is permitted along white pavement markings and unpainted kerbs.

Traffic laws

  • You must be at least 21 years old to rent a car in Jerusalem.
  • While driving, you should keep both hands on the steering wheel.
  • Children under 4 years of age must be secured in a child seat in the back of the car.
  • There is a fine for throwing litter from a vehicle in Jerusalem.
  • Both the driver and passengers must wear a seat belt.
  • You must not talk on the phone while driving.

The cost of fuel

In terms of fuel prices, Israel is among the five most expensive countries in the world. In Jerusalem, petrol stations sell petrol grades AI-91, AI-95 and AI-96. The average cost of fuel ranges between 6.5-6.8 ILS per litre. Diesel is slightly cheaper.

Jerusalem car rental — FAQ

For Jerusalem, it is wise to book your rental car at least 3 to 4 weeks before your trip, especially around Jewish holidays and peak tourist seasons when availability drops fast. Early booking usually means better car choice, more favorable rates, and more time to compare insurance options, fuel policies, and mileage limits from different suppliers.
After you return the car in good condition, most Jerusalem rental suppliers release the security deposit within 7-14 business days, though your bank may take a bit longer to show it. To avoid a frozen deposit altogether, look for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals, which use alternative coverage or payment methods instead of holding a large amount on your card.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you will personally pay toward damage or theft, before the insurer covers the rest. In Israel, it typically ranges from about 2,500 to 7,000 ILS, depending on the vehicle and supplier. You can usually reduce this amount, sometimes close to zero, by purchasing additional protection such as Super CDW or full coverage.
Most Jerusalem rental desks prefer a major credit card for the security deposit and may refuse debit or cash. However, some partners and brokers offer specialized options that use alternative payment methods. Search for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals on our site, and always check the "Payment and Deposit" rules before confirming your booking.
In Jerusalem, a small rental car typically costs around 150-280 ILS per day outside peak holidays, with larger cars, SUVs, and automatics priced higher. Seasonal demand, pickup location, insurance level, and extras such as GPS or child seats will affect the final rate, so compare offers across several dates and car categories before deciding.
Bookingcar lets you compare offers from multiple Jerusalem rental companies in one search, helping you spot low prices and clear rental conditions quickly. You can filter by automatic cars, fuel policy, mileage, or cross-border rules, and read transparent terms in English. Our interface simplifies insurance choices and often includes special rates and flexible cancellation options.
If you return your Jerusalem rental late, companies typically charge an additional hourly fee that can escalate to a full extra rental day, depending on how long you delay. This may also invalidate some insurance conditions. If you realize you will be late, contact the rental office or emergency number as soon as possible to discuss extending your contract and limiting extra charges.
Central options include the Kikar Safra parking near City Hall and the Mamilla / Alrov Mall underground parking by the Old City, both paid facilities with ticketed entry and hourly rates. The First Station (HaTachana) complex also offers organized lots. Street parking is usually blue-and-white zoned, requiring payment via parking apps or meters during regulated hours.
Most Israeli rental contracts forbid taking the vehicle into neighboring countries such as Jordan or Egypt, and entry into Palestinian Authority areas may also be restricted or excluded from insurance. If limited cross-border use is allowed, you must declare this when booking, obtain written permission, and pay any extra insurance or border-crossing fees specified by the rental company.
Speed limits are signposted in km/h and can change by section, so always follow local signs. Typical limits are:
  • Urban roads: around 50 km/h
  • Non-urban roads: 80–90 km/h
  • Dual carriageways: 90–100 km/h
  • Motorways (such as Route 6): 100–120 km/h on signed sections
Police and speed cameras enforce these limits strictly.
