Practical Information for Drivers

Driving rules you should know before renting a car in Kota Kinabalu

To rent a car the driver must be at least 23 and not more than 60 years old. Driving experience must be at least one year. You also need to present both an international driving licence and your national driving licence.

Traffic in the city is left-hand. There are many motorcyclists and cyclists, who often break the rules. Drivers almost never stop at pedestrian crossings and often increase speed if they see a pedestrian on the "zebra".

Seat belts must always be fastened. You may use a mobile phone only with a hands-free headset. Headlights should be switched on only when it is dark.

Drivers often break the rules, but rarely by speeding. Traffic is generally very slow, but you may easily see cars driving along the central reservation.

Speed limit

Speed limits are fairly standard for Malaysia and European countries. Pay close attention to the road signs. As a rule, you can drive at:

  • in the city - 40-60 km/h;
  • outside built-up areas - 90-100 km/h;
  • on expressways - 110-120 km/h.

Fines

The police are friendly and well disposed towards foreigners, provided they do not break the traffic rules. Any offence will definitely result in a fine; there are no discounts and no opportunity to negotiate. The main fines are:

  • not wearing a seat belt - 30 ringgit;
  • illegal turn - 70 ringgit;
  • speeding - from 90 ringgit;
  • illegal turn across a double line - 130 ringgit.

Permitted alcohol level if you are driving a car rented in Kota Kinabalu

You are allowed to drink a beer or a glass of wine. In this case the blood alcohol level will remain within the legal limit of 0.3-0.5 ppm.

If you have little driving experience, or you are not used to driving on the left, it is better to avoid alcoholic drinks altogether to reduce the risk of a traffic accident.

Kota Kinabalu car rental — FAQ

For Kota Kinabalu, it is wise to book 2-4 weeks ahead, especially for travel in school holidays or around major festivals. Last-minute bookings may cost more and limit your choice of vehicle size or transmission. Booking earlier also gives you time to compare fuel policies, mileage limits and insurance options across several suppliers.
Most Kota Kinabalu rental companies release the security deposit within 7-14 business days after you return the car, provided there are no new damages, fines, or missing fuel. Your bank may then take a few extra days to show the refund. Choosing no-deposit / no-credit-card deals can help you avoid a traditional deposit block altogether.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen, even when basic insurance is included. In Malaysia, typical excess levels range roughly from MYR 1,500 to MYR 5,000, depending on the class of car and provider. You can often purchase additional coverage to reduce this amount or bring it close to zero.
Most rental desks in Kota Kinabalu prefer a major credit card in the main driver’s name to secure the deposit. Some local suppliers may accept debit cards or cash, but conditions are stricter. Look for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals on Bookingcar, which highlight partners that offer more flexible payment options.
In Kota Kinabalu, a small rental car typically costs around MYR 120-180 per day, depending on season, supplier and how early you book. Larger SUVs, MPVs or automatic-only vehicles can be significantly more expensive. Prices usually include basic insurance and limited mileage, but extras like GPS, child seats or full coverage will increase the overall rate.
At Kota Kinabalu - Airport - Terminal 2 (BKI), you can find several well-known and local rental agencies, including National, Europcar, Avis, Hertz, kkia kings transport car, N Car, Megah Hwang Car, AYK Car, and WAHDAH Mini Hub Kota Kinabalu, giving you a broad choice of prices, car categories and rental conditions.
Bookingcar lets you compare multiple Kota Kinabalu suppliers in one place, showing clear terms on mileage, fuel, insurance and deposit. You can filter by car size, rating, and payment options, then lock in confirmed prices in your currency. Many offers include fair cancellation policies and 24/7 support, making it easier to handle travel plan changes.
If you return your Kota Kinabalu rental late, the company may charge extra hours or an additional day, based on their grace period and tariff. Extended unnotified delays might also affect insurance coverage. Contact the rental operator as soon as you know you will be late; they may adjust your contract and minimise unexpected charges.
Convenient options include Centre Point Sabah parking, Suria Sabah Shopping Mall car park, and Imago Shopping Mall’s multi-storey parking, all with paid hourly or daily rates. Street parking zones exist in the city centre but often have time limits and coupon systems. Many hotels and waterfront areas also provide designated, sometimes ticketed, parking areas for visitors.
Cross-border trips from Kota Kinabalu, for example into Brunei or Indonesian Kalimantan, are usually restricted and only allowed with prior written permission. Extra insurance, fees, or documentation may be required, and some companies forbid crossings completely. Always declare your plans when booking and confirm the rules in your rental conditions before you travel.
Typical speed limits in Malaysia are:
  • Urban areas: usually 50–60 km/h, depending on local signs
  • Rural roads: generally around 80–90 km/h
  • Federal and state roads: often 90 km/h unless otherwise posted
  • Highways / Expressways: up to 110 km/h, with some stretches lower due to roadworks or hazards
Always follow posted signs, as limits can change.
