Practical Information for Drivers

Features to consider when renting a car in Kuala Lumpur

To rent a car, the driver must be between 23 and 70 years old (the upper limit depends on the class of car). In addition, you will be asked to present an international driving licence. Please note that it is only valid together with your national driving licence.

In Kuala Lumpur people drive on the left. To help you remember this, mark the left side of the steering wheel (for example, with red tape) and make sure that the pavement is always on your left.

Drivers tend to drive quite slowly and a little carelessly. For example, a car may drive along the central dividing line. The roads are good, with no potholes. Motorcycles regularly travel with their headlights on, but this is generally not the case for cars. Seat belts must always be fastened, and you may not talk on the phone while driving without a hands-free headset.

Fines

The police monitor traffic rules closely and, although officers are generally understanding towards tourists, fines are issued properly. They are not collected on the spot; the only way to check whether you have a fine is to visit the official portal of the Malaysian Road Transport Department. If there is a fine, you can pay it by credit card.

Not wearing a seat belt will cost the driver 30 ringgit (about $10), speeding is three times more expensive. You can also often be fined for an illegal turn (70-130 ringgit).

Fuel for car rental in Kuala Lumpur

There is no shortage of petrol stations in the city. Most are self-service; you can pay at the till, and both cash in ringgit and credit cards are accepted.

There is a wide range of fuel: unleaded and premium petrol, diesel fuel, and you can also find gas (LPG) filling stations. The average cost of all fuels is $0.5-0.6, which is 2-2.5 times lower than prices in Europe, making car rental in Kuala Lumpur a very economical option for travel.

Permitted alcohol level

As in European countries, the permitted amount of alcohol corresponds roughly to a pint of beer or a couple of glasses of dry wine. When you exhale, the alcohol level must not exceed 0.25 ppm, and in the blood it must not exceed 0.5%.

If you are not used to left-hand traffic and its particular features in Kuala Lumpur, it is best to avoid alcohol altogether so as not to get into an accident.

Kuala Lumpur car rental — FAQ

Booking 2-4 weeks before arrival in Kuala Lumpur usually secures the best combination of price and car choice, especially around school holidays and major events. Last-minute rentals are possible, but popular classes and automatics may sell out or become more expensive. For peak seasons and long trips, consider reserving 6-8 weeks ahead.
Most Kuala Lumpur car rental companies release the security deposit within 7-14 business days after you return the car, provided there is no new damage, traffic fines, or unpaid fuel or tolls. Your bank may then take extra time to show the funds as available. Choosing no-deposit / no-credit-card deals can avoid this temporary hold.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you must pay if the car is damaged or stolen. In Malaysia, it commonly ranges from about MYR 1,500 to MYR 5,000, depending on vehicle class and supplier. If repair costs exceed this amount, insurance usually covers the rest. Extra coverage can lower or even buy back your excess obligation.
Most rental counters in Kuala Lumpur require a major credit card in the main driver’s name to block the security deposit. Some local or broker-arranged offers may accept debit cards or cash, but conditions are stricter and fleets smaller. Look specifically for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals if you do not have a credit card.
In Kuala Lumpur, a small to mid-size rental car typically costs around MYR 120-220 per day, depending on the season, supplier, and how early you book. Compact automatics and SUVs are usually at the higher end. Longer rentals often bring the daily rate down, while one-way or premium models increase the overall price.
At Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (KUL), you will find on-airport car rental desks operated by Hertz and Avis.
Bookingcar lets you compare many Kuala Lumpur suppliers at once, helping you quickly spot good prices, fuel policies, and mileage limits. You see transparent rental conditions before paying, can filter by card requirements or deposit size, and benefit from multilingual support. Special offers and package deals can further reduce your overall trip costs.
If you bring the car back late in Kuala Lumpur, most companies charge extra hourly fees and may bill an additional full rental day once you exceed the grace period stated in the contract. This can be much costlier than extending in advance, so contact the rental company immediately if you anticipate any delay and request a formal extension.
Central options include covered car parks like Suria KLCC, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, and Berjaya Times Square, all using ticket or Touch n Go systems with hourly fees. KL Sentral and Mid Valley Megamall also offer large, relatively secure parking. Street parking exists but can be crowded and requires paying at designated machines or via local apps.
Many Kuala Lumpur rental companies allow cross-border trips into Singapore or southern Thailand only with written permission and sometimes extra insurance or fees. You must declare your plans during booking or at the counter so paperwork and coverage are arranged. Unauthorized border crossings can void insurance and lead to large penalties.
Typical speed limits in Malaysia are:
  • Urban areas: usually 50–60 km/h, depending on local signs
  • Rural roads: generally around 80–90 km/h
  • Federal and state roads: often 90 km/h unless otherwise posted
  • Highways / Expressways: up to 110 km/h, with some stretches lower due to roadworks or hazards
Always follow posted signs, as limits can change.
