Practical Information for Drivers
Features to consider when renting a car in Kuala Lumpur
To rent a car, the driver must be between 23 and 70 years old (the upper limit depends on the class of car). In addition, you will be asked to present an international driving licence. Please note that it is only valid together with your national driving licence.
In Kuala Lumpur people drive on the left. To help you remember this, mark the left side of the steering wheel (for example, with red tape) and make sure that the pavement is always on your left.
Drivers tend to drive quite slowly and a little carelessly. For example, a car may drive along the central dividing line. The roads are good, with no potholes. Motorcycles regularly travel with their headlights on, but this is generally not the case for cars. Seat belts must always be fastened, and you may not talk on the phone while driving without a hands-free headset.
Fines
The police monitor traffic rules closely and, although officers are generally understanding towards tourists, fines are issued properly. They are not collected on the spot; the only way to check whether you have a fine is to visit the official portal of the Malaysian Road Transport Department. If there is a fine, you can pay it by credit card.
Not wearing a seat belt will cost the driver 30 ringgit (about $10), speeding is three times more expensive. You can also often be fined for an illegal turn (70-130 ringgit).
Fuel for car rental in Kuala Lumpur
There is no shortage of petrol stations in the city. Most are self-service; you can pay at the till, and both cash in ringgit and credit cards are accepted.
There is a wide range of fuel: unleaded and premium petrol, diesel fuel, and you can also find gas (LPG) filling stations. The average cost of all fuels is $0.5-0.6, which is 2-2.5 times lower than prices in Europe, making car rental in Kuala Lumpur a very economical option for travel.
Permitted alcohol level
As in European countries, the permitted amount of alcohol corresponds roughly to a pint of beer or a couple of glasses of dry wine. When you exhale, the alcohol level must not exceed 0.25 ppm, and in the blood it must not exceed 0.5%.
If you are not used to left-hand traffic and its particular features in Kuala Lumpur, it is best to avoid alcohol altogether so as not to get into an accident.
