Fines for violation of driving regulations

Depending on which traffic rule is violated, a fine is paid on the spot or at a bank. See some common violations and fines:

  • Exceeding the speed limit by 10-50 km/h results in a fine of 40-800 LTL
  • Exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h is punished with a fine of 1000-1500 LTL
  • Overtaking in a prohibited area – 100-150 LTL fine
  • Causing a dangerous situation on the road – 400-800 LTL fine
  • Stopping on the pavement – 50-100 LTL fine

Observe speed limits when driving a rented car in Lithuania

If there are no traffic signs indicating specific speed limits on the road, this means that the standard speed limits apply:

  • speed within built-up areas – 50 km/h
  • speed outside built-up areas – 90 km/h
  • speed on highways – 110 km/h
  • speed on motorways – 130 km/h

Violating the speed limit carries serious fines, so always try to keep your speed under control.

Blood alcohol content allowed

The maximum permitted blood alcohol content is 0.4 ‰. Bear this in mind if you plan to drive after dinner or visiting a bar. Exceeding this limit is punished with a fine of 1000-1500 LTL and confiscation of the driver's licence for one to one and a half years. If the blood alcohol content is significantly higher, the fine is 2000-3000 LTL and drivers have their licences confiscated for 2-3 years.

Drivers with less than two years of driving experience have stricter limits. The maximum blood alcohol content for them is 0.2 ‰.

Traffic regulations

To avoid fines and enjoy your trip, you should always follow the basic traffic regulations. For example, dipped headlights must be on, regardless of the time of day. It is prohibited to use a mobile phone while driving. Children may only travel in the car in child safety seats that are appropriate for their age and weight. In addition, pay attention to traffic signs that indicate prohibitions or parking rules, and to other plates that may contain important information.

Fuel

In Lithuania you can fill your car with RON95 and RON98 unleaded petrol or diesel fuel. RON92 petrol is also rarely available. There are gas filling stations throughout the country. If you are going to make a long trip, remember that it is permitted to transport a can filled with up to 10 litres of petrol.

In Lithuania the deposit is normally blocked, not taken, on your card. Once you return the car without new damage or unpaid fees, the hold is released.
