Speed limitations
The first and foremost to remember by driving a rented car in Vilnius is speed limitation. Violation of a speed limit leads to serious fines and driver's licence confiscation. If there are no peculiar limitations on the traffic signs, means that in this section of the road a standard speed limit is valid:
- within the inhabited area – up to 50 km/h
- outside the inhabited area – up to 90 km/h
- for highways – up to 110 km/h
- for autobahns – up to 130 km/h
Parking of a rented car in Vilnius
Parkings in Vilnius work for 24 hours and 7 days a week. There are underground, multistoried, and surface parkings. If you visit the Old Town by car, parking price is 2-6 LTL per hour. This cost depends on rate/charge in every particular area. Payments can be made by cash or by a special parking card. Parkings can be paid via pay machine. These machines don't give change, so you have to prepare required sum in coins beforehand. At nighttime the parkings are free of charge. Usually they have to be paid within 8 am to 8 pm.
Driving regulations
If you rent a car in Vilnius, you have to observe simple driving regulations that are often disregarded by many tourists. Elementary safety rules observance will allow you to rest comfortably without any fines.
Low beam must be switched on at any time of the day. Children must go in a car if only there is a special child safety seat corresponding to their age and weight. Besides, pay attention to the traffic signs, for example, to those, which inform about the prohibition or parking rules, or other plates, which can contain important information. Using a cell phone while driving is also prohibited.
In addition, it is prohibited to violate the speed limit, overtake in a forbidden places, drive on the opposite road lane, pass through a red traffic light, create traffic hindrance, and also park and turn in wrong places. Fines in Vilnius are rather large, so be extremely watchful.
Fuel
In Vilnius drivers can fill their cars with RON95 and RON98 unleaded petrol and also with diesel engine. Occasionally there can be RON92 petrol. Unlike most of the European countries, it is allowed in Lithuania to transport up to 10 litres of petrol in a vehicle.
The average prices for fuel are the following:
- RON95 petrol - 1.38 EUR
- RON98 petrol - 1.40 EUR
- Diesel engine - 1.34 EUR
Filling stations are both automatic and working with staff. One can pay with cash or a credit card.
