Practical Information for Drivers

Fines for violation of driving regulations

Although the Netherlands is associated with freedom, compliance with traffic regulations is strictly monitored and fines are quite high.

You can see the main violations and fines below:

  • frequent lane changes without reason – 220 EUR
  • illegible or damaged number plates – 40 EUR
  • using the horn without cause – 90 EUR
  • crossing a solid line – 220 EUR

Fines are imposed on the spot. Bear this in mind. In addition, if your car is parked illegally, it can be towed to a car pound without the owner being present.

Speed limitation

The following speed limits apply to cars in the Netherlands:

  • 50 km/h when driving within built-up areas
  • 80 km/h when driving outside built-up areas
  • 100 km/h on motorways
  • 130 km/h on expressways

Note that it is prohibited to drive at a speed of less than 60 km/h. This violation leads to a fine of € 360. Speed limit violations are usually recorded by cameras.

Parking for a rented car in the Netherlands

It is forbidden to park next to yellow kerbs. If a car is not parked according to the rules, its wheels can be clamped or it can be towed to a car pound. The fine in this case is 90 EUR. If a car is parked in spaces reserved for disabled drivers, the fine is 360 EUR.

Parking in the Netherlands is generally paid. P+R (Park+Ride) car parks are very popular: drivers leave their cars at special car parks on the outskirts and then go to the city centre by public transport. This system was introduced to relieve cities from the large number of cars.

Blood alcohol concentration allowed

Blood alcohol concentration must not exceed 0.5 ‰. If this limit is exceeded, the driver is fined between 350 and 750 EUR. If the blood alcohol concentration exceeds 1.30 ‰, the case is dealt with in court.

There is another limit for drivers with less than 5 years of driving experience. For them, blood alcohol concentration must not exceed 0.2 ‰.

The rules are rather strict, but compliance with them is essential to avoid unpleasant situations.

Driving regulations

Here are some basic traffic rules in the Netherlands. It is not necessary to switch on dipped headlights during the daytime. They must be switched on when visibility is low or insufficient. Rear fog lamps may be used only in fog or snow. Violation of this rule leads to a heavy fine. Children may travel in a car only in appropriate child safety systems or seats. All passengers must fasten their seat belts. It is also prohibited to use a mobile phone while driving.

Toll roads

There is no charge for using roads in the Netherlands. However, using some tunnels is not free of charge.

The toll for cars using the Westerschelde Tunnel is 5 EUR. You can pay in cash or by credit card. The toll plaza is located on the north side.

Using the Kiltunnel costs 2 EUR per car.
