Practical Information for Drivers

Fines for traffic offences in Warsaw

Across Europe, the authorities strictly enforce traffic regulations, and Warsaw is no exception. Breaches of the rules are inevitably punished with fines.

Speeding From 20 to 100 Euro
Driving through a red light 65 Euro
Illegal overtaking 65 Euro
Illegal overtaking 25 Euro
Drink-driving 150 Euro

Foreign citizens who commit traffic offences are required to pay fines in cash on the spot, as soon as the police officer issues a ticket.

Speed limits

Many drivers enjoy driving fast, but do not get carried away. After hiring a car in Poland, remember the speed limits. If you exceed them, you may be fined.

  • The maximum speed allowed in residential areas is 20 km/h
  • The speed limit in built-up areas is 50 km/h from 8.00 to 23.00 and 60 km/h from 23.00 to 8.00
  • The speed limit outside built-up areas is 90 km/h
  • The maximum speed allowed on dual carriageways is 110 km/h
  • You are not allowed to exceed 130 km/h on motorways.

Polish police officers often carry out speed checks in unexpected places. Be careful and do not take unnecessary risks.

Parking in Warsaw

Parking in a prohibited place will inevitably result in a fine. The police strictly enforce these rules. However, parking in Warsaw is generally not a problem. There are many car parks throughout the city.

There are both paid and free parking spaces. Please check whether a car park is paid or free before leaving your car. There are two main types of paid parking:

  • Automated car parks

You pay at these car parks using special machines designed to accept cash. One hour of parking costs 1 Euro. The price for 1 day of parking is about 10 Euro.

  • Car parks with attendants

Some car parks are staffed by attendants. They take payment and issue tickets. The cost of parking here is the same as at automated car parks.

Whichever type of car park you use, you must place the parking ticket under your windscreen before leaving the car. Otherwise, you risk finding a parking fine under your windscreen wiper.

Permitted blood alcohol level

Drink-driving in Poland, as in any other European country, is strictly punished. The maximum permitted blood alcohol level is 0.02 per mille. If this limit is exceeded, the vehicle, including a rental car in Warsaw, will be confiscated. The driver will also face a very substantial fine.

Moreover, if a medical test shows that the blood alcohol level exceeds 0.5 per mille, you may face criminal prosecution. The driver risks a prison sentence of up to two years.

Cost of fuel in Poland

The cost of fuel in Poland does not differ significantly from the European average:

  • 95 petrol costs 1.30 Euro per litre
  • 98 petrol costs 1.36 Euro per litre
  • Diesel fuel costs 1.31 Euro per litre.

There is an interesting trend in Poland: fuel in Warsaw costs 3-4% less than at filling stations located near motorways. You can pay both in cash and by credit card at almost all stations.

Toll roads in Poland

There are many toll roads in Poland. The charge ranges from 10 to 50 Euro, depending on the distance, the type of car and other factors. Always follow road signs carefully in order to choose the best route. This will help you notice in good time when you are approaching a toll road. Payment is usually taken in cash, so make sure you have enough money with you in advance.

Warsaw car rental — FAQ

Booking a few weeks ahead is usually ideal in Warsaw, especially for airport pickups and summer or holiday dates. Last-minute offers exist but often mean higher prices or limited choice. Reserving early lets you compare suppliers, secure automatic or specific classes, and lock in better cancellation terms and mileage conditions.
Most Warsaw providers release the security deposit within 7-14 business days after drop-off, once the car is checked. Your bank may take extra days to show the funds as available. To avoid a blocked limit altogether, look for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals, which use alternative coverage or payment methods.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen. In Poland it typically ranges from about 1,500 to 5,000 PLN, depending on car class and supplier. If a covered incident happens, the rental company charges up to that limit, which you can reduce or waive by buying additional protection.
Most rental desks in Warsaw still require a credit card in the main driver's name to block the deposit. However, some partners allow debit cards, higher insurance, or special no-deposit / no-credit-card deals. Always check payment conditions on Bookingcar before confirming, as rules differ by supplier and vehicle group.
For a small economy car in Warsaw, daily rates commonly start from about 90-130 PLN outside peak dates. During summer, holidays, or major events, prices can rise significantly, especially for automatics and SUVs. Longer rentals usually bring better per-day value, and Bookingcar lets you compare several local and international brands at once.
Bookingcar aggregates offers from many Warsaw suppliers, helping you quickly compare prices, fuel policies, and insurance options. You can filter by automatic transmission, one-way trips, and flexible cancellation. Transparent conditions, user reviews, and clear deposit information make it easier to choose exactly the car and provider that fit your trip.
If you return your car late in Warsaw, companies may charge additional hourly or extra-day fees according to their tariff. After a certain grace period, many start charging a full extra rental day. If you realize you will be delayed, contact the rental operator or Bookingcar support as soon as possible to adjust your contract legally.
Central Warsaw has paid street parking in the Strefa Platnego Parkowania Niestrzezonego (SPPN) zone, using meters or mobile apps. Popular secure car parks include underground garages around Zlote Tarasy, Plac Defilad near the Palace of Culture, and centers like Galeria Mokotow. Always read signs for hours, tariffs, and resident-only restrictions.
Many Warsaw rental companies allow travel to nearby EU and Schengen countries, but you must declare this when booking. Cross-border use often requires written permission, extra insurance, and sometimes an additional fee. Trips to certain non-EU states can be restricted. Always check your voucher and rental conditions before leaving Poland.
  • Built-up areas: 50 km/h (sometimes 60 km/h at night where signed)
  • Single carriageway roads outside towns: 90 km/h
  • Dual carriageways / expressways: 100–120 km/h (check signs)
  • Motorways (autostrady): 140 km/h maximum
Always follow posted signs, as local restrictions and roadworks may impose lower limits.
