Penalties for traffic violations in Rome
In Rome, it is common for police officers to accept payment of fines on the spot. When paying in this way, the amount of the fine will be the minimum, which is one quarter of the maximum. A mandatory condition when dealing with the police is that you are issued with a receipt when you make the payment.
Serious traffic violations committed at night increase the amount of the fine threefold.
Speed limits
Under the traffic regulations, the speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h. However, when determining the speed in favour of the driver, a 5% margin of error is applied.
Taking into account the 5% margin of error, exceeding the speed limit by up to 10 km/h corresponds to a measured speed from 137 km/h to 147 km/h.
The remaining ranges can easily be calculated according to the same principle:
from 10 km/h to 40 km/h: from 148 km/h to 178 km/h
from 40 km/h to 60 km/h: from 179 km/h to 199 km/h
over 60 km/h: from 200 km/h
Parking
Parking (Parcheggio) in Rome does not differ much from other parking zones in Italy. If leaving your car in the city centre, you should clearly understand the restrictions currently in force in the parking zone. These depend on the time of day, day of the week, and whether the date is even or odd. Even an unintentional breach is included in the system of fines.
When parking your car, you must pay attention to the colour of the parking zone line. At the moment, the following system of colour markings is used for parking zones:
- The blue line indicates a "pay and display" zone, which requires payment at an automated parking meter and placing the receipt on the inside of the windscreen, or recording the time on a parking disc;
- The white line indicates a free parking zone;
- The yellow line indicates a special parking zone for people with physical disabilities and for delivery vehicles.
Admissible blood alcohol level
According to the traffic regulations, a small blood alcohol content is permissible. It is limited to 0.5% for drivers over the age of 21 with more than 3 years of driving experience.
The following blood alcohol content ranges apply:
- from 0.5% to 0.8%;
- from 0.8% to 1.5%;
- over 1.5%
The amount of the fine, the period of driving licence suspension or the term of imprisonment depend on these levels.
Traffic regulations
The traffic rules in Rome regulate the relationships between all road users on different types of road.
If you have booked a car in Rome, you should familiarise yourself with the main regulations, such as:
- Standard speed limits;
- Blood alcohol content levels;
- Use of dipped headlights;
- Transporting children;
- Use of seat belts;
- Restrictions on using a mobile phone while driving.
Fuel cost
A wide network of fuel stations has been developed for convenient driving along Italy's main highways. When starting your journey, remember that fuel stations in small Italian towns close for several hours during the day. Their current opening status is shown on a sign: Aperto (open) or Chiuso (closed). Fuel stations located on the main highways are open 24 hours a day.
Fuel prices at such stations are 10-20 euro cents higher than at fuel stations located near shopping centres.
Toll roads
The motorway network in Italy is toll-based. If you are going to start your trip in a car hired in Rome, you should remember to make the toll payments for using the motorways, as well as any charges for driving through certain tunnels.
The toll rates for motorways are fixed. The difference in cost ranges from 2 EUR (Naples – Salerno) to 52.20 EUR (Milan – Naples).
To calculate the cost of driving on a motorway in a rented car in Rome, you should take the toll unit and multiply it by the distance you have driven in kilometres. It is also important to add 20% VAT to the calculated amount. When making payment by your chosen method, the amount is rounded to the nearest tenth (0.10 EUR).
However, these are not the only factors that determine the final cost. When driving along Italian highways and motorways, you should also consider the following:
- The class of the car booked in Rome — the vehicle class is determined by the height of the front axle of the car, as well as the number of axles;
- The rates of the operating company — all motorway sections are divided between different companies, which separately determine the cost of "their own" section of road;
- The type of motorway section — mountain or plain.
