Why drive in Jordan

Follow the Desert Highway from Amman to Petra and Wadi Rum, stopping at crusader castles and lookouts along the way. A car keeps you flexible as you time your own arrival at Petra or sunset in the desert.

Take the scenic Kings Highway past Madaba, Mount Nebo and the canyons of Dana. With your own wheels it is easy to link the Dead Sea, Aqaba and smaller villages without relying on tour buses or fixed timetables.

Practical Information for Drivers

Renting a car in Jordan, do not exceed the speed limit

In Jordan, the following speed limits apply:

  • Within residential areas in Jordan you may drive at a maximum speed of 50–70 km/h (the same rule applies to multi-lane highways in Amman);
  • The maximum speed on highways is 90–110 km/h.

Road signs are relatively rare on Jordanian roads.

Parking

In the country there are both paid and free car parks. These are indicated by special markings (kerbs painted in shades of blue and white), or by signs. Usually, you can park for free on Saturdays, or after seven in the evening. In cities, municipal car parks requiring payment are located in the central areas. Charges are made by the hour. You can use free parking at supermarkets, shopping centres, as well as on residential streets.

Traffic Laws

Vehicles in the country drive on the right-hand side. Bear in mind that local drivers do not always follow the rules of the road, so you should be particularly careful.

The use of seat belts is mandatory. Traffic police officers are stationed on certain stretches of road – in the event of minor traffic violations they tend to treat tourists leniently.

The cost of fuel

Renting a car in Jordan can be relatively inexpensive, and does not usually take much time. Note that hire companies often provide cars with nearly empty fuel tanks (and ask you to return them in the same condition). You will not find petrol stations offering significantly lower fuel prices, because prices are set by the state:

  • 90-octane unleaded petrol costs about 0.80 dinars per litre;
  • 95-octane – 0.97 dinars.

What drivers say about Jordan

"We enjoyed driving around Amman and to the Dead Sea, and the car was clean and fuel‑efficient. Check‑in was fairly smooth, but we had to wait longer than expected at pick‑up because our car was still being washed. Staff were polite and helpful once we finally got on the road."

"I travelled with a friend and the car was perfect for our trip from Amman to Petra and Wadi Rum. Pick‑up was well organised, the tank was full, and GPS worked fine. Staff were kind, answered all our questions, and return at the airport was very straightforward."

Renting in Jordan — FAQ

For the best choice and prices in Jordan, it is wise to book a hire car at least 2–4 weeks before your trip. In busy periods such as public holidays, Eid, and the main tourist season (March–May and September–November), booking 4–6 weeks ahead is recommended, especially for 4x4s and automatic cars, which sell out quickly.
In Jordan, the rental company usually places a pre-authorisation hold on your card rather than taking the money. After you return the car without new damage or unpaid fines, the hold is typically released within 3–14 days, depending on your bank. Some offers feature reduced deposits or no-deposit options; always check your voucher for exact terms and timescales.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you pay towards damage or theft before the insurance covers the rest. In Jordan, it commonly ranges from about JOD 300 to JOD 900, varying by car type and supplier. If the vehicle is damaged, you can be charged up to this amount. Many companies offer extra cover that lowers the excess or reduces it to zero for an additional daily fee.
Most Jordanian rental companies prefer a major credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. However, some local and international suppliers accept debit cards and occasionally offer no-deposit or no-credit-card deals with special conditions, such as buying full cover or limiting car categories. Always check payment rules in the booking terms before confirming your reservation.
Prices in Jordan vary by season and car type, but a small economy car typically costs around JOD 18–30 per day if booked in advance. Automatic and SUV/4x4 models are higher, often JOD 30–60 per day, especially near Amman and Aqaba airports. One-way rentals, young driver fees, and extra insurance can increase the overall price, so review the full cost breakdown before booking.
Bookingcar lets you compare prices from many rental companies in Jordan in one search, so you can quickly see which deal is cheapest or best value for your needs. You can filter by car type, fuel policy, mileage, and deposit level, then book the offer that fits your budget. This price-comparison approach helps you find savings that might not appear if you checked only a single provider.
If you return your hire car late in Jordan, most companies start charging extra after a short grace period, often 30–59 minutes. You may be billed an additional hourly rate or an extra full day, sometimes at a higher last-minute price. Unnotified late returns can also affect insurance cover. If you realise you will be late, contact the rental office as early as possible to discuss options.
Typical speed limits in Jordan (unless signs state otherwise):
  • Inside cities and towns: about 50 km/h
  • Main rural roads: 70–90 km/h
  • Highways and major routes (e.g. Desert Highway): 100–110 km/h
Always follow posted signs, as limits may be lower near schools, villages, checkpoints, and roadworks.
Fines in Jordan are usually payable in Jordanian dinars and can be added later to your rental. Common penalties include:
  • Speeding: roughly JOD 20–100, higher for serious cases
  • Mobile phone use while driving: from about JOD 30
  • Running red lights or dangerous driving: higher fines and possible court action
Unpaid tickets can lead to extra admin fees from the rental company.
Jordan applies a very strict approach to drink-driving. The practical legal limit is effectively 0.00% blood alcohol concentration for drivers, and police can carry out roadside checks. Any detectable alcohol can lead to substantial fines, licence issues, and possible court proceedings. To stay safe and avoid problems with your rental and insurance, do not drink at all before driving in Jordan.
Fuel prices in Jordan are regulated and adjusted monthly. As a ballpark figure, 90-octane petrol is often around JOD 0.95–1.10 per litre, with higher-octane petrol slightly more and diesel sometimes a bit cheaper. Prices can change, especially when global oil costs move, so it is wise to check the latest local rates at stations or online just before your trip.
Jordan currently does not use a motorway toll or vignette system like some other countries. Most major roads, including routes between Amman, the Dead Sea, Petra, and Aqaba, are free to use. You may, however, encounter small charges for certain parking areas, private access roads, or tourist sites. These are usually paid in cash on the spot and are not part of your rental fee.
