Lisbon car rental — FAQ

Booking 4-8 weeks before your trip to Lisbon usually gives you the best mix of price and vehicle choice, especially around summer, Easter, Christmas and major events. For off-peak months you can sometimes book closer to arrival, but larger cars, automatics and SUVs often sell out early, so reserving in advance is strongly recommended.
After you return the vehicle in good condition, the rental provider usually releases the security deposit within 7-14 business days, although your bank may take a bit longer to show the funds as available. Choosing no-deposit / no-credit-card deals can avoid a traditional blocked deposit altogether, which many travelers find more convenient.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen. In Portugal, it often ranges roughly from EUR 800 to EUR 2,000 depending on car class. If repairs cost less, you pay only that lower amount. You can usually reduce or even eliminate this liability by purchasing extra insurance coverage.
Most Lisbon rental desks require a credit card in the main driver’s name to secure the deposit and payments. However, some partners accept debit cards or offer special options. Look for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals on Bookingcar to find suppliers with more flexible payment and deposit policies that better match your situation.
Average prices in Lisbon typically start around EUR 20-35 per day for a small economy car in low season, while summer and holiday periods can push rates closer to EUR 40-70 per day. Larger vehicles, automatics and one-way rentals cost more, so comparing multiple offers and dates on Bookingcar can significantly reduce your total costs.
At Lisbon Airport (LIS) you will find major and local brands including Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Avis, Waygo, CRC, Sicily by Car, Klass Wagen Lisbon, and Drivalia, all offering a range of vehicles and conditions. Their counters are either in the arrivals hall or in nearby car-rental centers linked by short signposted walks.
Bookingcar lets you compare many Lisbon providers in one search, so you can easily filter by price, fuel policy, mileage, or insurance level. Clear rental conditions, verified partner reviews and 24/7 support help you avoid surprises at the desk, while frequent special offers and flexible options make it easier to match your budget and travel plans.
If you return your Lisbon rental car late, the company may charge additional hourly or extra-day fees, and your insurance coverage might not apply outside the agreed time. As soon as you realize you will be delayed, contact the rental operator or Bookingcar support so they can note your situation and advise on potential extra costs.
Central options include underground car parks like Parque Restauradores, Parque Camões, Parque Martim Moniz and Parque do Campo das Cebolas, where you take a ticket on entry and pay at machines before leaving. On-street parking is divided into colored zones (EMEL), with payment at meters or via app and strict time limits in busy neighborhoods.
Many Lisbon rentals can be driven into Spain and some other European countries, but cross-border travel must be declared when booking or at pickup. The provider may charge an additional fee and issue specific insurance or paperwork. Always check the rental conditions and keep authorization documents in the car to avoid problems at border checks.
Default speed limits in Portugal are:
  • 50 km/h in built-up areas (towns and cities)
  • 90 km/h on rural single-carriageway roads
  • 100 km/h on some expressways (Itinerarios Principais/Complementares) where signed
  • 120 km/h on motorways (Autoestradas), unless lower limits are posted
Always follow local signs, as limits may be reduced near schools, villages, roadworks or in bad weather.
