Renting a car in Rotterdam? Be sure to familiarise yourself with the local traffic regulations:

• Do not exceed the general speed limits for each type of road or any special speed restrictions;

In Rotterdam, motorists have access to diesel and unleaded petrol in two grades for refuelling vehicles. Many filling stations also offer LPG. The cost of fuel is determined daily, depending on the pricing policy of the largest oil companies in the Netherlands.

• Gas (LPG) - 0.753 euros per litre;
• Petrol 95 - 1.743 euros per litre;
• Petrol 98 - 1.814 euros per litre;
• Diesel - 1.369 euros per litre.

In Rotterdam, as in the rest of the country, it is permitted to drive a vehicle with a maximum blood alcohol content of 0.5‰. This is an average level compared with most countries. Penalties for drink-driving in the city are very severe, and for exceeding the permitted limit a driver faces a substantial fine of between 350 and 750 euros, as well as more stringent sanctions.

Types of parking:

• P + R - parking costs 8 euros; the driver is issued a special card that allows free travel on public transport from the car park to the city centre and back;
• P-Zone - paid parking with vouchers sold in vending machines (the ticket is placed behind the windscreen);
• Blue Zone - parking with a special parking disc showing the time.
