Practical Information for Drivers

Penalties for traffic offences in Vienna

In Austria there are no uniform penalties for breaches of traffic regulations. Each region of the country has different penalties. Police officers have the right to issue on-the-spot fines. If you have rented a car in Vienna and commit a traffic offence, you will be issued an official receipt. If the fine is a large amount, you will be asked to pay a deposit and settle the balance within 14 days. The amount of the fine is often at the discretion of the police, depending on the specific road conditions.

Speed limits

There are standard speed limits for vehicles across Austria:

  • 50 km/h in built-up areas;
  • 80 km/h on country roads;
  • 100 km/h on motorways.

The minimum permitted speed on expressways is 60 km/h. If you have rented a car in Vienna with studded tyres, you may drive on main roads at up to 100 km/h, and on other routes at up to 80 km/h.

Parking

On almost all streets in Vienna, parking is chargeable and time-limited. Below are the rates:

    • free of charge if parking for 10 minutes or less
    • 1 euro for 30 minutes
    • 2 euros for 1 hour
    • 3 euros for 1 hr 30 min
    • 4 euros for 2 hours.

If you want to park your car for a longer period, it is better to use underground garages (about 25 euros per day) or P+R car parks (3 euros per day).

Permissible blood alcohol levels

The maximum permissible blood alcohol level for driving in Vienna is 0.49 ‰. For drivers with less than 2 years of driving experience, the limit is 0.1 ‰. Exceeding these levels incurs the following severe penalties:

Drink driving (from 0.5‰ to 0.79 ‰) a fine of 300 to 3700 euros; repeated offence – referral to a psychologist (200 euros)
Drink driving (from 0.8‰ to 1.19 ‰) a fine of 800 to 3700 euros and a driving ban for 1 month; repeated offence – a fine and a driving ban for 3 months
Drink driving (from 1.2‰ to 1.59 ‰) a fine of 1200 to 4400 euros and a driving ban for 4 months
Drink driving (above 1.6 ‰) a fine of 1600 to 5900 euros and a driving ban for six months
Refusal to take a blood or breath test for alcohol a fine of 1600 to 5900 euros and a driving ban for six months

Fuel cost

If you have rented a car in Vienna, you can refuel at any local filling station selling unleaded petrol (98 and 95) and diesel fuel. The sale of leaded fuel is prohibited. There are also some gas stations, but they are few. You may carry no more than 10 litres of fuel in cans.

Average fuel cost in Vienna
Petrol 95 1.42 euros
Petrol 98 1.55 euros
Diesel fuel 1.36 euros

Toll roads

In Austria, using some highways, motorways and special road sections is chargeable (vignette). Depending on the type, drivers can use toll roads within a certain period of time.

Cost of vignettes:
  • 8.30 euros for 10 days
  • 24.20 euros for 60 days;
  • 80.60 euros for 365 days.

You can buy a vignette at some filling stations in Austria and bordering countries. It must be affixed to the car before you drive onto a toll road.

Vienna car rental — FAQ

For Vienna we recommend booking as early as possible: ideally 2–8 weeks before travel, longer for peak summer, Christmas or large events. Early booking secures better rates and choice of vehicle; last‑minute deals pop up but are less reliable. For special models, reserve several months ahead to avoid disappointment.
The security deposit is usually released by the rental company once the car is returned, but your bank then processes the refund — typically within 7–14 business days. If you prefer to avoid holds entirely look for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals, which either remove the hold or use alternate payment arrangements.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum you pay towards damage or theft before insurance covers the rest. In Austria typical excess ranges from EUR 500–2,000 depending on vehicle and supplier. You can often reduce or eliminate the excess by purchasing additional cover such as a collision damage waiver (CDW) or super‑CDW at booking or the desk.
Most rental desks in Vienna prefer a major credit card for the security hold, though some accept debit cards with extra ID, proof of return travel and a larger deposit. If you need to avoid a credit card entirely search for no-deposit / no-credit-card deals, which are offered by select suppliers under specific conditions.
Prices vary with season, car type and extras; expect roughly €35–€60 per day on average in Austria, with a typical everyday compact around €45 per day. Longer rentals usually lower the daily rate, while airport pick‑ups, one‑way fees and added insurance increase the total cost.
At Vienna International Airport (VIE) you can find the main rental operators: Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Enterprise, Avis, National, Budget, Alamo, Zippy7, all with desks in the arrivals/ground transport area; opening hours and exact desk locations vary by terminal so check your booking confirmation for details.
  • Compare prices: instantly view multiple suppliers and vehicle classes to find the best value.
  • Local support: clear booking terms and customer assistance for Vienna pick‑ups.
  • Filters: add extras, choose fuel policy and insurance options before you book.
If you expect to be late contact the rental operator immediately to explain and avoid escalation. Late returns usually incur hourly or full‑day fees and may affect insurance cover; prolonged failure to return can lead to recovery charges and police involvement, so communication is essential to limit costs.
Good options include Parkhaus Am Hof, The Mall / Wien Mitte garage, Messe Wien Parkgarage and Park & Ride sites at Erdberg, Leopoldau or Süßenbrunn; Vienna Airport car parks P1–P4 suit longer stays. Pay at machines or by app, respect short‑term 'Kurzparkzone' meters and use Park & Ride for economical long‑term parking with easy U‑bahn access.
Driving into neighbouring EU/Schengen countries is usually permitted but you must declare cross‑border travel when booking; rental firms may charge a cross‑border fee or require extra insurance. Some non‑EU destinations are restricted. Always check the allowed countries on your rental agreement and carry all travel and vehicle documents.
Typical limits are:
  • Built-up areas: 50 km/h
  • Rural roads: 100 km/h
  • Motorways (Autobahn): 130 km/h
Always follow local signs, as lower limits may apply near schools, in tunnels, on certain motorway sections, or in bad weather. Temporary roadworks zones are strictly enforced with cameras.
