Speed limits

Below are the common speed limits for all vehicles in Germany.

  • 50 km/h in built-up areas;
  • 30 km/h in special quiet zones (near schools, pedestrian zones, etc.);
  • 100 km/h outside built-up areas;
  • for expressways, the minimum speed is 60 km/h, there are no maximum speed limits; the recommended maximum speed is 130 km/h;

On motorways in and around Munich, you must normally keep to the right-hand lane. Overtaking is only permitted on the left. Overtaking on the right is prohibited.

Parking

Having hired a vehicle in Munich, you cannot park that vehicle just anywhere on the street. Parking against the direction of traffic or in a prohibited area incurs a penalty. Some parking spaces are only for locals (Anliegerfrei and Anwohnerparken). At the entrance to a car park, you will need to take a ticket or token. Payment is made at a machine when leaving the car park. To park your vehicle in a paid zone on the street, you need to buy a parking disc (Parkscheibe) at a petrol station and place it on the windscreen.

Permissible blood alcohol levels

The maximum permissible level of alcohol in the blood is 0.3 ‰ for drivers with more than 2 years of driving experience and 0.00 ‰ for drivers with less than 2 years of driving experience or who are under the age of 21. Exceeding these levels incurs severe penalties, which may include a driving ban and imprisonment.

Fuel cost

In Germany, there are many petrol stations selling unleaded petrol (98 and 95) and diesel fuel. Leaded fuel is not sold. There are many petrol stations around. The most popular fuel is E10 containing 10% ethanol, but it is not suitable for all cars. When renting a car in Munich, check with the rental company whether the car can use E10. It is permitted to carry fuel in cans.

Average fuel cost in Munich:
Petrol 95 €1.61
Petrol 98 €1.63
Diesel fuel €1.39

Toll roads

There are no urban or suburban toll roads. You only pay for entry into the centre of Munich – the low-emission zone (Umweltzone), created in order to reduce air pollution by fine dust. This zone is indicated by road signs and additional signs. Entry requires a special sticker, which you can buy at vehicle inspection centres or authorised garages, and stick to the inside of the windscreen. The cost ranges from €5 to €15. When renting a car in Munich, keep in mind that this sticker will be valid in all environmental zones across Germany.

Munich car rental — FAQ

For Munich, booking 2–4 weeks in advance usually gives the best mix of price and choice, especially for airport pickups and popular dates like Oktoberfest or school holidays. In high season, book even earlier to secure automatics or larger vehicles, as last-minute availability can be limited and daily rates rise sharply.
The security deposit is normally released by the rental company when you return the car undamaged, but it can take 7–14 business days for your bank to unblock or refund the amount. Processing times vary by card issuer. To avoid a frozen limit, check our no-deposit / no-credit-card deals, which use alternative payment conditions.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen. In Germany, it typically ranges from about EUR 750 to EUR 1,500, depending on vehicle class and provider. If repair costs are lower, you pay only that amount. You can often reduce or even bring the excess to zero by adding extra insurance cover.
Most rental desks in Munich require a major credit card in the main driver's name for the security deposit. Some local or broker-arranged offers accept debit cards or cash-like options instead. To avoid a traditional card hold, look for special no-deposit / no-credit-card deals, but always read payment and identification rules carefully.
In Munich, a small economy car typically costs around EUR 35–55 per day, while compact or midsize models may run EUR 55–80, depending on season and pickup location. Prices rise during trade fairs and holidays. Extras like GPS, child seats, one-way fees, and additional insurance are charged on top of the base daily rate.
At Munich - Airport - Franz Josef Strauss (MUC), you will find the following car rental companies: Sixt, National, Europcar, Enterprise, Alamo, Avis, Hertz, Budget, alltours Reisecenter, all conveniently located in or near the main terminal areas with clear signs to their counters and parking garages.
Bookingcar lets you compare many Munich suppliers at once, showing clear prices, fuel and mileage rules, and deposit conditions. You can filter by location, transmission, and insurance options to match your plans. Multilingual support and verified partner reviews help you choose confidently and secure competitive rates in a few clicks.
If you return your Munich rental car late, most companies charge additional hours or a full extra rental day once a grace period is exceeded. Prolonged delays may also affect insurance coverage. Always contact the rental company as soon as you know you will be late; they may adjust your contract and limit extra fees.
In central Munich, popular car parks include Parkhaus am Stachus, Parkgarage Marienplatz, and Parkhaus Hofbraeuhaus, all signposted and barrier-controlled. You take a ticket at entry and pay at machines before leaving. P+R (Park & Ride) sites such as P+R Fröttmaning are cheaper options, linked directly to the U-Bahn network.
Many Munich rental cars can be driven into nearby countries like Austria, Italy, Switzerland, or the Czech Republic, but each supplier has its own rules and restrictions by vehicle class. Always declare planned cross-border travel when booking, as you may need written permission, extra insurance, or an additional fee on your rental.
Standard speed limits in Germany (unless signs say otherwise):
  • Built-up areas (towns and cities): 50 km/h
  • Outside built-up areas (rural roads): 100 km/h
  • Dual carriageways without central junctions: usually 100–120 km/h
  • Autobahn: recommended 130 km/h; some stretches have fixed limits, others have no general limit but conditions and signage must always be respected
