Penalties for driving a car, leased in Madrid

violations of children transportation regulations – up to 200 Euro;

violations of safety measures (seat-belts usage) – up to 200 Euro;

using a cell phone while driving – 200 Euro;

exceeding of the speed limit:

• up to 20 km/h: inside and outside the city – 100EUR;
• up to 30 km/h: inside the city – 300 EUR; outside the city – 100 EUR;
• up to 40 km/h: inside the city - 400 EUR, outside the city – 300 EUR;
• up to 50 km/h: inside the city - 500 EUR, outside the city – 300 EUR;
• up to 60 km/h: inside the city - 600 EUR, outside the city – 400 EUR;
• up to 70 km/h: inside the city - 600 EUR, outside the city – 500 EUR.

If the speed rate is higher than 70 km/h, the penalty amounts to 600 EUR regardless of the road.

Parking: things to know when renting a car

Parking rules both for hired cars, and other motor vehicles in Madrid, depend on the days of week, the time of day, and even months.

While parking is a blue zone it is required to purchase a special parking coupon. It is available in a nearby standing automated device: from Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. At weekends the working time is from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The coupon fee amounts to 1,5 EUR per hour. The closer to the center you are, the more expensive is the parking coupon. The automated device will calculate the cost itself.

If there is a need of car parking for a long period of time, you are welcome to use the services of the underground parking zones, where there is an obligatory indicator of unoccupied parking lots right at the entry pass. The parking fee can be paid while entering the parking zone, at a checkout counter or at fuel filling station. The price starts from 22 EUR per day.

During a siesta time, as well as on Sunday, it is possible to find a toll-free parking zone in the city. Such zones are marked with a while line. But if you see a parking sign for people with disabilities, you should know that it is forbidden to park here any other motor vehicle. Otherwise, your car, booked in Madrid, will be towed away, leaving you a sticker with a call number.

Admissible alcohol limit

The top admissible alcohol limit is 0,5%. If your driving experience is less than 24 months, the highest allowed blood alcohol content for you is 0,3%.

Exceeding the maximum permissible level of alcohol entails a penalty of 500 Euro. The refusal of consent to pass a blood alcohol content test is also subject to a penalty of 500 Euro.

• It is obligatory to use dimmed headlights while passing through any type of tunnel;
• Children under 3 years should be transported in cars only in special child restraint systems, each of which is optimized for a corresponding weight of a child;
• Children, whose age is over 36 months, and height is below 135 cm, should be transported only in a child seat or a booster;
• Passengers on the front and back seats are obliged to use safety-belts;
• It is forbidden to use a cell phone while driving if it is not equipped with a hands-free system;
• When at a fuel filling station of any type, make sure your cell phone is turned off.

Fuel cost

The lead-free petrol and diesel fuel are available for purchase. It is allowed to carry up to 10 liters of petrol in a canister. A large number of the city fuel filling stations operate automatically (without an operator), the payment is accepted by credit cards. The approximate fuel cost: petrol 95 – 1, 38 EUR; petrol 98 – 1,50 EUR; diesel fuel – 1,34 EUR.
