Parking: things to know when renting a car

Parking rules for both hire cars and other motor vehicles in Madrid depend on the day of the week, time of day, and even the month.

In blue parking zones you must purchase a special parking ticket. It is available from a nearby parking meter from Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. At weekends it operates from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The ticket costs 1.5 EUR per hour. The closer to the centre you are, the more expensive the parking ticket will be. The parking meter will calculate the cost automatically.

If you need to park your car for a long period, use an underground car park, where an electronic sign at the entrance shows the number of available spaces. The parking fee can be paid when entering the car park, at a pay desk or at a filling station. Prices start from 22 EUR per day.

During siesta hours, as well as on Sunday, it is possible to find free parking in the city. Such zones are marked with a white line. However, if you see a parking sign for people with disabilities, you should be aware that parking is prohibited there for any other vehicle. Otherwise, your car hired in Madrid will be towed away, and you will be left a notice with a telephone number.

Admissible alcohol limit

The maximum admissible blood alcohol limit is 0.5%. If you have held your driving licence for less than 24 months, the highest allowed blood alcohol content for you is 0.3%.

Exceeding the maximum permissible level of alcohol incurs a fine of 500 EUR. Refusing to take a blood alcohol test also results in a fine of 500 EUR.

Traffic regulations

  • It is compulsory to use dipped headlights when driving through any type of tunnel;
  • Children under 3 years of age must only be transported in cars in special child restraint systems, each of which is optimised for the child's weight;
  • Children over 36 months of age and shorter than 135 cm must only be transported in a child seat or on a booster;
  • Passengers in the front and rear seats are required to wear seat belts;
  • It is forbidden to use a mobile phone while driving unless it is equipped with a hands-free system;
  • At any filling station, make sure your mobile phone is switched off.

Fuel cost

Unleaded petrol and diesel fuel are available. It is permitted to carry up to 10 litres of petrol in a canister. Many city filling stations operate automatically (without an attendant), and payment is accepted by credit card. Approximate fuel prices: petrol 95 – 1.38 EUR; petrol 98 – 1.50 EUR; diesel fuel – 1.34 EUR.

Madrid car rental — FAQ

For Madrid, booking 2-4 weeks in advance usually gives the best balance of price and choice, especially around Easter, summer, and major events. For Christmas, long weekends, or if you need a specific vehicle type (automatic, 7-seater, premium), consider reserving 6-8 weeks ahead to avoid limited availability and higher last-minute prices.
Most Madrid rental companies release the security deposit within 7-14 business days after drop-off, once they confirm fuel, mileage and damage status. Your bank may take a bit longer to show the funds as available. If you prefer to avoid a frozen deposit altogether, look for special no-deposit / no-credit-card deals when comparing offers.
The excess (deductible) is the maximum amount you must pay if the Madrid rental car is damaged or stolen. In Spain it typically ranges from about EUR 600 to EUR 1,800, depending on car class and supplier. The rental company covers costs above that amount. You can often reduce or even bring the excess close to zero by purchasing additional insurance coverage.
Most rental desks in Madrid require a main driver credit card for the security deposit. Some local or broker-arranged offers accept debit cards under strict conditions, such as higher insurance. To avoid a card hold entirely, compare special no-deposit / no-credit-card deals, but always check payment rules on your voucher before you book.
In Madrid, economy and compact cars usually start around EUR 25-35 per day outside peak season, while summer and holiday periods can push typical prices to EUR 40-60 per day or more. Larger vehicles, automatics, and SUVs cost extra. Always factor in insurance, fuel policy, optional extras, and one-way fees when comparing overall rental costs.
At Madrid - Airport (MAD) you will find well-known international and local brands, including Sixt, Europcar, Enterprise, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, F. Tomé, RecordGo. Their counters are signposted in the arrivals areas of the relevant terminals, with vehicles located in nearby car parks connected by lifts or short walks.
Bookingcar lets you compare many Madrid suppliers in one search, helping you find low prices, clear fuel and mileage terms, and flexible cancellation on many rates. You can filter by automatic gearboxes, child seats, or insurance options, and see real rental conditions before paying. Support is available if plans change or if you need help with your booking.
If you return your Madrid rental car late, companies usually charge extra, often another full day once a grace period is exceeded. Availability for extensions is not guaranteed. If you realize you will be delayed, contact the rental operator or Bookingcar support as soon as possible to request an extension and minimize additional fees or contract violations.
Good central options include public car parks like Parking Plaza de España, Parking Plaza Mayor, and Parking Indigo Princesa, where you take a ticket and pay at machines by time stayed. You can also use regulated street zones (SER blue and green areas) with meters or mobile apps. Park-and-ride lots near Metro stations help avoid driving deep into busy central streets.
Many Madrid rental companies allow travel to nearby countries such as Portugal, France or Andorra, but you must declare this when booking or at the counter. Cross-border use might be limited to certain EU states and often involves an additional fee and specific insurance conditions. Unauthorised border crossings can invalidate coverage, so always confirm rules in your rental terms.
Standard speed limits in Spain are usually:
  • Urban areas: 50 km/h (sometimes 30 km/h in residential or school zones)
  • Single carriageway roads: 90 km/h
  • Conventional roads with hard shoulder: up to 100 km/h if signed
  • Motorways and dual carriageways (autopistas/autovias): 120 km/h
Always follow local signs, which take priority over general limits, and slow down in bad weather or heavy traffic.

"Family trip with two kids, easy pick-up at Madrid airport and the car was spotless and perfect for all our luggage. Staff were patient explaining the child seats. Only small downside: the queue at the counter was a bit long after our flight."

"We were four friends exploring Madrid and the surroundings, and the car handled the trip really well. Price was fair and the fuel policy clear. We did feel the deposit refund took longer than expected, which was a bit stressful, but overall it worked out fine."
