Car rental in Zakynthos

Zakynthos is largely a rural island, so parking problems should not arise outside the main town. In the island's capital you can easily find both free and paid parking. To use paid parking, you simply buy a special card at a kiosk. To activate it, you must mark the parking start time and then place the card on the inside of the windscreen. There are strictly defined zones in all car parks: yellow spaces are reserved for emergency and special service vehicles, blue for vehicles of local residents, and white for visitors to the island with a rented car.

On the island of Zakynthos, Greece, the standard speed limits for cars are:

• within built-up areas - 50 kilometres per hour;
• outside built-up areas - 90 kilometres per hour;
• on main roads - up to 110 kilometres per hour;
• on motorways - up to 130 kilometres per hour.

Fuel prices in Greece are currently among the highest in the world. The average price of petrol on the island of Zakynthos is 1.75 euros. For comparison, the current average price of petrol in Europe is 1.46 euros.

The authorities on Zakynthos accept that you may drink and drive, but drivers must know when to stop. Driving while intoxicated can lead to confiscation of the vehicle for up to six months and a year in prison. The permitted blood alcohol level is 0.3 per mille for drivers with more than two years' experience, and less than 0.2 per mille for those with less than two years' experience and for motorcyclists.
